For some reason I decided to pull the old P-38 out of its case and have a look. Fell in love with it all over again, even if it IS a 9MM. 
Superb German engineering, and the first successful locked breech D/A semiauto design ever. The long trigger pull is heavy, but with the hammer cocked the pull is excellent. It sits very well in the hand, and it's balanced to the rear, something I like even though it doesn't help dampen recoil. It's also just a damn sexy looking handgun, IMHO. Why Walther thought they could replace it with the ugly P-5, I'll never know. Their mechanisms are very similar, with the P-5's decocking lever moved to the frame, away from the P-38's slide mounted decocker/safety lever. Given my choice, I'll take the 38 over the 5 any day.
One thing I don't like is the European style heel magazine latch, but it is easy to get used to.
The P-38 was the granddaddy of all D/A semiautos, and anyone who doubts its influence has only to disassemble a P-38 and a Beretta 92 side by side. Same open topped slide, same pivoting barrel locking block, same simple disassembly procedure.
Now I'm itching to go empty some 9MM cases!!! If you've never experienced the P-38, find one, even if it is just to hold and examine. If you get to shoot it, that's even better!!

I thought I had a photo of MY P-38, but I don't, so I'll put one up here a little later on.
This thread isn't about a pissing contest between guns. It was only meant to be a commentary on one particular gun.
If you have another gun you want to wax poetic about, start your own thread and let's read it.
I didn't claim the P-38 is the best, or anything like that. It was simply a commentary about a particular gun I like. Why does everything have to turn into a war, or at least a skirmish?

Yes, my daughter took the picture and sent it to me via the internet.
The blanket is covering the hood of my riding mower. It's overcast here so there is no bright sunlight.
