it was a great season with a lousy ending. love the make up of this team... but it's tough getting playoff experience without actually being in the playoffs on a regular basis. pens were a tough draw... wouldn't be surprised if they won it all this year, but bob was shaky, it took 2 games before our offense went to the net and we couldn't handle the puck in our own zone well enough. i love torts' stance over the weekend that good is the enemy of great. just having a successful regular season isn't nearly enough. the pieces are in place for this club to make more noise next season and for a few beyond.

Lots of discussion about the playoff format this year due to this matchup. No one division has been so top heavy since they changed the format like it was this year so I am curious to see if the GMs don't tweak it a little before next year. The Pens are solid in all facets of the game and the scary part is they aren't fully healthy either. They are certainly beatable and the further they get, the more miles they will have on their legs but if anyone is going to beat them, they will have to bring their A game. I don't see Washington being that team but Ottawa plays a physical game that could wear on the Pens defense. The Rangers run hot and cold so anything would be possible there but the Pens are good. No question about it. Torts has a lot of good quotes and that was another one he had posted on the wall here in Tampa. He took over a team here that had lots of talent but no direction. They also didn't know how to win. Dave Andreychuk was brought in to teach the kids how to be professionals and Torts molded that talent into a Cup champion. Similar situation in Columbus minus the proven veteran leader. If they can learn "how" to win in the playoffs, anything is possible. And all that might take is winning their first series. I admit, I was shocked at the turnaround being do quick. The defense was the achilles heel but after a rough first two weeks, Torts had them playing so much better. That and the goaltending being better than it was last year played a huge part in the success. I still don't know that the organizational depth is there and as I mentioned above, I think bringing in a guy who can mold these young guys into "professionals" is a must but they got a taste of success this year and that might just be enough to get them over the hump in the coming years. We'll see. BTW, I am not doing a post-mortem for the Lightning. Too depressing.
