D Day

Normandy Invasion was 73 years ago today. Don't know who else on here has been to those beaches, but I went a few years back on a tour. Sobering as hell. Still don't know how they pulled it off.  The cemeteries in the region are still immaculately maintained.  Went to a private residence where the owner built a memorial at his own expense, and raises flags every morning in honor of the soldiers that died.  God Bless those brave Brits, Canadians and Americans.

   Americans usually think of the European theater in WWII in terms of D-Day.  But it happened late in the war, after our Italian campaign was launched.

    It was, as I recall, the largest armada ever assembled in history, and certainly hastened the impending defeat of the Third Reich by the Red Army.

   But the war in Russia and Eastern Europe was the main theater of WWII, and the casualties and battles were immense in comparison with the Western front.  IMO, most Americans don't grasp the difference in scale and duration.

  25 million Russians died in WWII, 8 million Germans, and 1 million Yugoslavs.  In comparison, about 350 thousand Americans died in WWII in the Pacific and European theaters combined.

    Put differently, 75 Russians, 25 Germans, and 3 Yugoslavs died for every 1 American killed in WWII (in Europe and the Pacific combined.)

    D Day happened almost five tears after WWII began.

  A n d the Third Reich deployed a lot of teenagers -- the Hitler Jugend-- on the Western front at the end of the war.  The experienced Nazi veterans were mainly fighting the massive Red Army on the Eastern front.

As I mentioned once before, a neighbor who we all keep an eye on was flying over in a bomber as it was happening. Impressive from above.

I have just been deleting them. It is a strange thing, but it somehow doesn't bother as much when I know a machine produced the post. It becomes nothing but a bit of noise.
And there is some fun in some. I mean, "Hootie and the blowfish is my favorite hardcore band"??

As I said about more interesting, and I'm guessing the bots don't have two Ivy League degrees.

But I won't be impressed until the new heavy metal Zeppitator New Kids album is promoted.

But, frankly, Walter needs to check these IP addresses.

I suspect that these recent "bots" were posts by Fruity Freddie.
