EUGENE, Ore. - Junior KeAndre Bates won his second long jump national title of the year, and freshman Grant Holloway finished right behind him, tallying 18 points Wednesday night for No. 2-ranked Florida to open the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Bates (8.05 meters / 26 feet, 5 inches), who won the indoor long jump national title in March, and Holloway (8.00 meters / 26 feet, 3 inches) are the second pair of teammates in Division I history to post a 1-2 finish in the long jump. Texas Southern’s Paul Emordi and Vernon George are the only other duo to accomplish the feat, doing so in 1987.
“I was just focusing on my execution, because I was not doing what I was supposed to be doing,” Bates said. “I had to really focus on being in the moment instead of thinking in my mind all the time. I really had to get out of my head. I was in my head from the beginning, because of the 4x100 (relay run) as well. But I got it together, made sure I got it together at the last jump. And it was my last jump! That was back to high school days. I’m happy. I’m good.”
Bates’ title is the third in school history, while Holloway became the fourth freshman since 1986 to post a top-two finish. They were also the only two men in the competition to hit the 8-meter mark, with Holloway finishing four centimeters clear of third place.
“It’s been phenomenal watching KeAndre, watching him grow up,” UF coach Mike Holloway said. “He’s got a big shadow cast on him. I’m sure someplace in the back of his mind he didn’t want to hear (Marquis) Dendy’s mouth if he let Grant beat him. That’s a great fraternity to have, with Dendy, Christian (Taylor), Will (Claye) and Omar (Craddock), that whole crew. It was fun to watch him

Florida men go back to back as outdoor track & field national champion:
EUGENE, Ore. – Behind four individual national champions, Florida's men won their second consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships team title Friday night (June 9) at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
This is the Gators' fourth outdoor national title in the last six seasons, as well as the program's seventh indoor or outdoor national title in school history. Florida has won all seven of its NCAA titles since 2010, leading all Division I programs by two titles during that span.
Florida also won the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2012, 2013, and 2016, in addition to its three straight victories at the NCAA Indoor Championships from 2010 through 2012.

EUGENE, Ore. – Fifth-year senior Kyra Jefferson has been rounding back into elite form the entire outdoor season, and she capped her Gators career on an emphatic note, breaking the outdoor 200 meters collegiate record Saturday (June 10) and helping Florida finish fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jefferson broke Dawn Sowell's (LSU) 28-year-old collegiate record to win the first outdoor 200 meters national title in school history. The Detroit, Mich. native's time of 22.02 seconds topped Sowell's 22.04, which was run at the 1989 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Provo, Utah. Jefferson's previous personal best of 22.24 seconds, which she ran in a fourth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships, was tied for the 10th-fastest time in collegiate history.

That last race for the NC by the Oregon women was a feat to behold. What a race! Oregon and USC ran an Affirmed vs. Alydar type of race. The Oregon women winning 3 national championships in a row is quite the accomplishment. The Florida men have won 2 national championships in a row. The UF men and women did a combined best with the men at #1 and the women at #5. Last year it was the men #1 and the women #8. There was some improvement which is a good thing. Looking at the women's track times, it's amazing how much the women's results have improved over the last 5 years. Times out to 5 or 6 deep were the winners 5 years ago. Women's track is definitely on the rise.
