The Wood Brothers and the #21 Ford are NASCAR legends. Glenn and Leonard Wood started racing the NASCAR circuit in 1950. Over the years some of the greatest drivers have piloted the #21 Ford. Curtis Turner, Marvin Panch, Fireball Roberts, Parnelli Jones, Tiny Lund, Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen, and Cale Yarborough all won in the #21 in the '50s and '60s. Legendary Formula One driver Dan Gurney won 4 times on road courses in the 1960s. Gurney only drove 4 races. Other great drivers were David Pearson, Neil Bonnett, Bobby, Donnie, and Davey Allison, Buddy Baker, and Kyle Petty.
From 1950 through 2016, 98 wins were earned by the Wood Brothers team. They pioneered the planned and speedy pit stops in the early 1960s and won races by beating every other car off pit road. They even developed exercise routines and workouts for the pit crew to improve their timing. This was so successful that the team was hired to work the pits for Jim Clark in the 1965 Indy 500. Clark won. In all this time, the Wood Brothers have only put Fords on the track.
The most recognizable cars ever in NASCAR are the #43, #3, and #21, with the #48 right behind them.
Last Sunday at Pocono, young Ryan Blaney took the #21 Wood Brothers Ford to Victory Lane for win #99. I saw last year, in his first full season driving the #21, that Blaney was going to be a very good driver, and predicted early this year that he would get a win.
