TRADE:
To #Blackhawks: F Brandon Saad G Anton Forsberg 2018 5th RD pick
To #BlueJackets: F Artemi Panarin F Tyler Motte 2017 6th RD pick
Panarin isn't just an emerging star, he is one right now. Saad is no slouch either but Panarin has been almost a point a game player since coming over from the KHL. The salaries are a wash so I am a little curious as to why Chicago would pull the trigger on this unless they were concerned about being able to re-sign Panarin next year while Saad is locked in for a couple more years on his deal.
Forsberg wasn't going to unseat Korpisalo so it gives him new life in CHI while the Jackets get Tyler Motte in return to add depth although I admittedly know little about him.
This looks like a good trade for both teams but if I am a Jackets fan, I am ecstatic to have Panarin.

I speculated above that they probably had concerns with being able to re-sign him. With the Toews, Kane and Seabrook contracts already on the books, Panarin's next deal will be a big one so the Hawks would have had to deal him at the deadline or lose him in free agency. They will get some relief this year with Hossa being out but they are in cap hell so from that angle, I guess it makes sense. Speaking of Toews and Kane, word is they lobbied hard to get Saad back. I guess when your superstars want something, you make it happen even if it costs you a star like Panarin.
