FOR INFORMATION ONLY, AND ONLY MY OPINION. Not to be construed as a putdown of the others.
Been doing a lot of research on .45ACP defensive ammunition, and I came to the conclusion that I would carry only "Winchester PDX1 .45 Auto 230 gr. JHP Bonded Personal Protection" ammo in my .45ACP's.
Reasons: 1) It's a full weight bullet (230 grains) 2) It is NOT +P 3) Tests using the industry standard "charging criminal" ballistic gel and 4 layers of denim show it gives adequate penetration ....... 13 - 15" 4) The same tests show it expands to over .800", many times close to .900" -- almost double the bullet's unfired diameter 5) Recovered bullets retain their full weight with no fragmenting, even with complete expansion. 6) It performs excellently in wall penetration tests as well.
Naturally all the real-life variables can't be factored in, but all the different loads I looked at were tested exactly the same way, and the PDX1 proved to be the best performer, based on those tests. Looks like I'll be stocking up on PDX1, and that stuff ain't cheap.
Interesting side note: If I KNEW I were always going to be defending myself from a "soft" attacker, I would use Glaser Safety Slugs, if they are still available. One coroner misidentified a fatal wound from the GSS as a "close contact wound from a .410 shotgun." That stuff is DEVASTATING.
[Again, this is just an opinion on what I will carry, and not a condemnation of anyone else's choice. We all have to decide for ourselves what handgun load we will use to save our own bacon.]

My mags are loaded with Gold Dot 230gr but I have a variety of SD rounds I could use. Ranger, Corbon, Golden Saber.

I just find it more convenient to find one type and stick to it. Different brands, containing different powders and bullet shapes, will not necessarily shoot to the same point of aim. Mix different guns and brands of ammo, and you have a total Chinese fire drill on your hands. IMHO, if you prefer the Gold Dots, use them exclusively and shoot up the other ones for practice, saving the empties to reload more practice ammo. If you REALLY wanna get picky, find the one that shoots best in each of your guns and pair them up exclusively. That's probably more time consuming and expensive than it is worth, though.
Unfortunately, Glocks won't handle cast bullets, but I have a supply of 1000 or so Mexican .45ACP rounds that are duds. "All" I have to do is pull all the bullets and use them for reloading. The ones I have done so far have been quite good. The tips are painted with a green lacquer (Beaners are weird!), so I cal them "leprechauns."
Again, just MY thoughts, brother.

Again, just MY thoughts, brother.I stick to the Gold Dot for actual defensive rounds in 9mm (125gr +P 1st choice, and 147gr), .45 ACP (230gr 1st choice, plus some 185gr and even some "flying ashtray" 200gr) and .223 Rem (64gr 1st choice, and a good amount of 55gr as backup). I've got a metric butt ton of that stuff but I've bought batches of other stuff to try out when it pops up on sale. I like the Win Ranger 230gr too and have about 500 rounds on hand as backup to my main stash of Gold Dot, all waiting to be retrieved from their watery grave.

I carried the Speer 200 gr JHP's (flying ashtray) on duty back in the day, but I've come full circle now and have returned to favoring the standard weight bullets. Maybe just a mental thing, but that's me. I carried .357 Hydrashoks in my S&W Model 66.
The main thing is ----- no matter what I carry, I hope I NEVER have to find out if they are truly effective. Shooting another person is the very last thing on my list of options.

Fun to shoot at the range though. I forgot to add that they're +P's.

Don't sell the 230 grain FMJ's short. I've seen what they can do to the human body, and it ain't pretty. One of our locals was shot in the head with .45 hardball. It dug a channel into his skull and kept on going. It put him down and he died within a few minutes, begging one of the other cops "Please don't let me die." Yeah, he was talking and conscious for a bit, but he was essentially dead when that bullet hit him. (It was another thug who got him)
Remember, NO HP is guaranteed to expand, and that's why I choose the .45 over smaller calibers. The .45 will NEVER shrink. +P isn't necessary in a .45. All it does is increase recoil and recovery time.
