Here's a good idea that Massad Ayoob presented.
If you live in an anti-gun jurisdiction where there are Trn-type asshole lawyers who like to harass law-abiding citizens, find out what ammunition your local cops or state police use, and use the SAME THING. Most departments issue/specify good HP loads. That way, if you are ever asked on the stand, "Why did you choose this particularly devastating hollowpoint ammunition that is intended to main and cause great suffering to the shooting victim?", you can coolly answer, "I use the same ammunition that the police do."
Unless that attorney wants to claim that the police want to maim as well, that SHOULD shut him up.
Lawyers only THINK they are smart.

Good thinking. Another good reason to use Speer God Dot "LE Duty Ammunition". It says so right on the box.

I've never heard of ammunition type being an issue here in God's State, though.

I was buying some .38 special 110 grain hydro-shoks for my wife's weapon a few years ago and kinda wondered aloud if I should go with a heavier grain and a detective with the sheriff's dept. was standing a few feet away and remarked that was the ammo he carried in his revolver. I said thanks and thought . 'well, that's good enough for me.

I said thanks and thought . 'well, that's good enough for me. Some departments don't regulate the weapons or ammunition their officers use, although that is becoming less common in today's lawsuit-happy atmosphere. The average cop is far from a gun expert, so that's why I recommend what a DEPARTMENT issues. At least you know you have a regulation standardization to back up your decision. Unless you know an indiivdual cop's gun experience level, I wouldn't rely on his recommendations. Not knowing your wife's experience, I'd say the 110 grainer was a good choice since it has less recoil than a heavier bullet.
By the same token, LE agencies have been known to make horrible official choices of weapons and ammunition as well. My own dept. was guilty of that when they mandated first 9MM's, then .40 cals, both in horribly shitty S&W guns. My last day, when I turned in that shitty S&W .40, I thanked God that now I was free to carry my S&W 645 again.
What was the difference between the 9's, 40's and my 645? Night and day. The 645 has the smoothest, lightest DA trigger pull of any DA semiauto I have ever tried, and the SA pull is ridiculously great! It's like the department deliberately chose the heaviest triggers they could find. PD's are known for doing that, as a "safety" measure, apparently not caring that horrible trigger pulls contribute to missed shots.
[Yeah I know ............. I'm going off on a tangent, but it beats talking with loony liberals about politics.]

Yeah, those old S&W M&P .40S&W polymer framed pistols sucked monkey balls big time. I'll never figure out why so many depts. went with that gun/caliber other than dept. politics and lemming behavior. Apparently, the latest iteration has addressed many of the earlier shortcomings.

Apparently, the latest iteration has addressed many of the earlier shortcomings. Where did I say we had M&P's? We had all steel S&W shit. Their "Tactical" series of boat anchors, doorstops and paperweights.
We had one clown who bullshitted the Chief into believing he knew guns, and the Chief acted on HIS recommendation alone. To the best of my knowledge, no other officer in the department was consulted at all. This is the same guy who thought he could be a K-9 officer and spent more time chasing his runaway dog than crooks. Next he tried being in charge of a SWAT team, and had them out in Zodiacs in the Mississippi River, pretending to board oceangoing freighters to "save" them from terrorists. He never considered that terrorists on the bridges of those ships would blast his boys in their rubber boats to the bottom before they got close. The Chief put him in detectives for a while and he sucked at that, too. It got REALLY bad when another Chief was indicted for lying to the FBI, and Golden Boy became interim Chief because he was the highest ranking officer who lived in the City Limits.
Like I said, he was an expert bullshitter and would have made a great con man if he had gone rogue.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have insisted that we equip our officers with Glock 21's. Good size for an exposed duty weapon, chambered for the best of the "Big Three " defensive handgun calibers, Easy tomlearn by a noob, and revolver safe. Beddy bye for me. Maybe more in the morning after I get rest. Maybe it won't be interesting enough to continue this discussion.
