"What’s her last name? I’ll look it up."
"You know, I don’t really recall. Starts with an “S”. Swim? Swammi? Slippy? Slappy? Swenson? Swanson?"
"Maybe it’s on the briefcase."
"Oh, yeah. It’s right here. Samsonite. I was way off! I knew it started with an “S” though."
WEEK 8
1. (4-2) IOWA -1 AT NORTHWESTERN (3-3)
Iowa lost to PennSt by 2 pts, and to Michigan State by 7, so they are a pretty good team. Northwestern seems like a Jeckyl/Hyde team, playing well against Wisconsin but not so well against PennSt and lowly Duke. I think Iowa is more consistent and all around more solid.
Iowa
2. (3-3) INDIANA +6.5 AT #18MICHIGAN STATE (5-1)
Unlike Wisconsin, who misses almost any B1G team with a pulse, Indiana plays their 4th ranked team of the year. So, at 3-3, one wonders just how good they are. They lost to UM last week, who lost to MSU the week before. Both games were one score difference games. Tough call but at MSU, I’ll hang my hat on that half point.
Michigan State.
3. (4-3) SYRACUSE +16.5 AT #8MIAMI (FL) (5-0)
The giant killer game #1, as Cuse heads south to take on the Canes. They get 16.5 points and haven’t lost all season by more than 9. Miami meanwhile has won their last two games by a combined 5 points.
Syracuse
4. (5-1)#19MICHIGAN +9.5 AT #2PENN ST.(6-0)
This is a game with final 4 ramifications. PSU/UM pits an experienced PSU offense against a young UM D. Michigan hasn’t scored more than 28 points on the road this season so they clearly don’t want a shootout. The question is whether their D can keep them in the game. If this turns into a D battle, is that too many points to lay? Yes.
Michigan
5. (3-4) BOSTON COLLEGE +7 AT VIRGINIA (5-1)
Just when you want to write off BC, they go beat Louisville on the road. Meanwhile, Virginia has won 4 in a row and are a surprising 5-1, but haven’t played a ranked team. I think this will be a close game and the Eagles have shown they can play on the road.
Boston College
6. (5-1) KENTUCKY +10.5 AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-2)
Kentucky has quietly gotten to 5-1 and their only loss was to Florida by one point on a TD scored with under a minute to play. They come off a bye week and play a MissyState squad that just beat up a bad BYU team after getting schooled by both Auburn and Georgia. Of course, Kentucky is neither of those, but they are better than a two score dog.
Kentucky
7. (4-2) ARIZONA -3 AT CALIFORNIA (4-3)
Cal, washed up and left for dead, jumps up and slays Washington State last week while Arizona comes off wins over Colorado and UCLA. Problem is, both those teams can’t play defense. Now, the Cal D ain’t the ‘85 Bears D, but they are better than Zona's, and they get 3.
California
8. (5-1) #10 OKLAHOMA STATE -7 AT TEXAS (3-3)
Oklahoma State can score points. We know that. Texas, not so much. Texas comes off the Red River loss while OkSt had a bye week. They played Baylor. OSU needs to win out to stay in the NC hunt, and Texas just lost to their rival. 7 points won’t save them.
Oklahoma State
9. (4-3) LOUISVILLE +6.5 AT FLORIDA STATE (2-3)
We should call this the “How the Mighty Have Fallen Bowl”. The seasons of both teams have unraveled. FSU is struggling on offense, and Louisville is, well…struggling. The FSU D has kept them in games while the Louisville D hasn’t.
Florida State
10. (6-1) #11USC +3.5 AT #13 NOTRE DAME (5-1)
There isn’t anything to say about this one. It’s the oldest intersectional rivalry in football. Both teams are solid, both teams have one very respectable loss to a ranked team and both teams have played a pretty good schedule. That said, USC wins by 40.
USC
11. (5-2) #24LSU -6.5 AT OLE MISS (3-3)
LSU creeps back into the top 25 with wins over Florida and Auburn after crashing and burning to Troy. Was Troy the wakeup call that Coach O needed? Maybe. Ole Miss hasn’t beaten anyone with two-legged players, so I’ll lay 6.5 all day long.
LSU
12. (4-2) FRESNO STATE +7.5 AT SAN DIEGO STATE (6-1)
Fresno State. Fresno State. What do we make of Fresno State? They haven’t beaten anyone that matters, but their only losses are to two top 5 teams in Bama and Washington. Their wins haven’t been close affairs, so can they play with SDState? They get more than a TD to find out, and San Diego State just had their world collapse to Boise State at home last week.
Fresno State
13. (3-3) ARIZONA STATE +9 AT UTAH(4-2)
Another giant killer gets points on the road. This time AZSt travels to Utah to take on a Utah team that has lost their two games by a combined 4 points. Was the win at Washington a fluke? I think not, but Utah’s players will be on a mission to end the losing.
Utah
14. (5-0) #20 CENTRAL FLORIDA -7 AT NAVY (5-1)
Central Florida has scored 40, 51 and 63 in the past three weeks while Navy had its unbeaten record shattered last week at Memphis 27-30. Oh…BTW, is that the same Memphis that UCF beat with that 40-3 win three weeks ago?
UCF
15. (4-2) IOWA STATE +6 AT TEXAS TECH (4-2)
Iowa State comes off the stunning win at Oklahoma to massacre Kansas last week 45-0. Texas Tech comes off a loss at West Virginia. Wait….and you’re giving Iowa State the points? I actually had to double check to make sure I got that right. Is this the weekly sucker bet? If so, I am one.
Iowa State
