The 9 Gulf South Conference coaches have voted West Florida to finish a close second to West Alabama. Last season, West Alabama beat West Florida during the regular season, but West Florida won in the playoffs at West Alabama when it mattered most: goargos.com/news/2018/8/2/football-uwf-picked-second-in-gsc-preseason-poll.aspxHave to disagree with the coaches as the Argonauts will win the Gulf South Conference with a conference best defense and an offense with many returners and the best QB in the conference.

#2 West Florida shutdown #22 Carson Newman in the second half to pick up a Thursday night opening win 19-9: goargos.com/news/2018/8/31/football-2-uwf-rides-shutdown-defense-to-19-9-win-over-22-carson-newman.aspxThe Argos travel to Wichita Falls, Texas to play #11 Midwestern State on Saturday. Argos starting QB Mike Beaudry sprained his ankle mid way through the 1st quarter. Sam Newman, 2nd string transfer from Georgia where he never played on anything other than the scout team, played well in relief. He has a habit of telegraphing his passes by staring down his receivers. Since it's a long week since Thursday, I hope Beaudry is ready to play, but I doubt it.

2018 turned out to be a dud of a 3rd season for West Florida. Starting QB Mike Beaudry's ankle was more serious and he missed the rest of the season. The Argos record reflected the loss of its starting QB and they failed to make the 2018 playoff.

NCAA Playoff H I S T O R Y:
For the second time in West Florida's 4 year football history, the Argonauts made the 2019 D2 playoff, this time as an at-large 20th ranked team in the nation. UWF's record headed into the playoffs was 8-2 and the Argonauts would have to face all road games to advance. The historic playoff story:
UWF (13-2) completed the most remarkable postseason run defeating 3 #1 seeds and 4 consecutive undefeated teams for the first time ever in NCAA history to win the University's 1st football national championship with a 48-40 win over Minnesota State in McKinney, Texas. UWF played in it's second NCAA D2 Championship Game in 4 seasons of football, lost the 2017 national final 37-27 to Texas A&M Commerce. The team improved to 35-17 all-time after starting play in 2016. The Argonauts are 9-1 in NCAA postseason games and now own the highest winning percentage in D2 history among teams who have played a minimum of 10 playoff games. The road to the title featured wins at #16 Wingate Bulldogs (38-17), #1 and defending national champion Valdosta State Blazers (38-35), #6 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (43-38), and #2 Ferris State Bulldogs (28-14). The wins over Valdosta State, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Ferris State ended the three longest home field winning streaks in D2. Those victories along with the win over #4 Minnesota State Mavericks (48-40) were all over teams that entered the game undefeated.

The 2021 best college football team in the state of Florida: goargos.com/news/2021/11/13/football-no-3-uwf-claims-first-conference-title-with-61-42-win-over-no-2-valdosta-state.aspx West Florida Argonauts In UWF's first four seasons of competition, they went to the national championship game final in their second year in 2017 and won the 2019 national championship. The only reason UWF isn't playing for a 3-peat is because DII didn't play in 2020 due to the China Virus. UWF was the underdog in their historic road playoff runs. That won't be the case this year as UWF will host their first playoff game and is the team every other DII team knows they will have to beat to win the 2021 national championship. Good luck with that. UWF is peaking at the right time again. The 61-42 win yesterday was over #2 nationally ranked and previously unbeaten Valdosta State, the 2019 national champion beating the 2018 national champion. The best passing team in the nation turned in their best ever running game to win the game. There isn't anything this UWF team cannot do. The best college QB in the state of Florida: goargos.com/sports/football/roster/austin-reed/6196Austin Reed 6'2"/220 is a redshirt sophomore who can beat you passing and running. He was QB for UWF's run to the DII national championship in 2019. Reed transferred to UWF after attending 1 season at FCS Southern Illinois in 2018. He's a Florida boy from St. Augustine Beach so he is at home in Pensacola. If not the best QB in the state of Florida, I know for certain he is better than any QB on the Florida Gator roster at this time. I don't know how Reed dropped out of FBS consideration coming out of St. Augustine High School, the same high school Tim Tebow attended, as the 2017 Florida 6A Player of the Year. West Florida is fortunate to have him. The Gulf South Conference is considered to be the SEC of DII football. The conference will likely have 3 teams in the DII playoff, Valdosta State (9-1), West Florida (9-1), and West Georgia (8-2). UWF's lone loss was to West Georgia at mid-season before the team rallied to start peaking at seasons end. Any of these 3 teams are capable of winning the DII national championship, but I think West Florida has the best shot. I'm hoping for West Georgia to win their first game in the playoff which would likely set up an avenge match with West Florida.

I don't know, but the kid is a player. In a real sense, every team in FBS football dropped the ball. I don't recall who was rated the best high school QB in the state in 2017 either. Just so you know, UWF was seeded 3rd in the 7 teams in the region to be named to the DII playoff. Valdosta State was beaten by 19 last night by West Florida yet Valdosta State was seeded #1 in the region which gives them a 1st round bye. It's like the game last night didn't count. The playoff committee had obviously already made up their minds BEFORE the game was played. The decision to not move West Florida up to #1 in the region after that big win is a combination of ineptness and poor/lazy decision making. (shaking head). The seedings will fuel the fire when UWF's playoff run starts next week. The DII playoff committee should be ashamed of themselves. Valdosta State has to love getting a bye after being whipped so bad by West Florida. It also means West Florida has to play at Valdosta State as they did in 2019 if both teams advance to the national semifinal game. That can be corrected if West Georgia wins their opening round game and then wins at Valdosta State in game 2. West Georgia would then travel to West Florida in the national semifinal.

Gotta love some payback. Ferris State stomped Valdosta State 58-17 in the D2 NCG on Saturday evening in McKinney, Texas: www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/32900791/jared-bernhardt-ferris-state-complete-undefeated-football-season-division-ii-crownIn the 2021 regular season finale between West Florida and Valdosta State, the UWF Argonauts routed the Blazers 61-42. Both teams shared the Gulf South Conference title with 1 loss, but UWF had that big head-to-head win. The D2 playoff committee ranked Valdosta State #1 in the region with UWF #3 in the region which meant Valdosta State had a week off to recharge their batteries after the big loss to UWF. UWF lost 33-30 in the first round playing the most uninspired brand of football I have seen UWF play. Not getting the week off and getting snubbed by the committee had to affect the team and coaches. They played like it. The playoff committee should be ashamed for having that type of effect on what should have been an easy decision to elevate UWF to #1 in the region with a first-round bye, a decision that clearly wrecked the focus/concentration of a team that had peaked at just the right time of the season. I could not be happier that Ferris State won their national championship by grounding Valdosta State into the turf in McKinney, Texas. Before the Valdosta State at West Florida game, the VSU HC guaranteed a win over UWF. That's arrogance that I haven't seen in a long time, maybe since Joe Namath guaranteed the New York Jets win over the Baltimore Colts back in the late 60s. I'm familiar with Ferris State as UWF beat them 28-14 in the frozen tundra of Great Rapids, Michigan in the 2019 semifinal when UWF went on to win the 2019 national championship. Worth repeating: Ferris State 58 Valdosta State 17. Congratulations to Ferris State on the big win national championship and for administering the beatdown Valdosta State richly deserved.
