Highlands Ranch, Colorado is one of the last places in the Denver metro area where I would have expected this morning's tragedy to occur. Douglas County is white, middle class, low crime, and staunchly Republican.
One of my patients, a lady in her 60s, recently sold her house and moved to this apartment complex out there on County Line Road. It is mainly a community for elderly folks, but she did tell me that there was a younger white guy living with his mother or grandmother in her building who seemed "creepy."

Sad story here this morning. Another nut with a gun shoots 5 cops...![]()  Police officers line up their patrol cars outside of Littleton Adventist Hospital for a procession honoring an officer who was fatally wounded in a domestic incident in a Highlands Ranch apartment complex on Sunday, Dec. 31st 2017. Four other police officers and 2 civilians were wounded.

Details are emerging about the man who ambushed and shot 5 deputies yesterday morning in an apartment in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
37 y/o lawyer from Rawlins, Wyoming named Mathew Riehl.
The guy had served in the U.S. Army in Iraq. Honorable discharge. National Guard service. Had guns.
Moved to Lone Tree, Colorado, and was angry at the local sheriff after getting a traffic ticket.
Ranted on YouTube about running for sheriff as a libertarian-- had some sort of psychotic fixation on the local police.
Roommate told the police that the guy was having a nervous breakdown, and split from the scene after giving the police the key to the apartment.
Did he tell the cops that the guy had guns, and was enraged at the police? Geez...

Don't look now, but this is hardly the first time in recent weeks that a U.S. military veteran with guns shot some innocent people.
Still don't know the details, including possible PTSD and/or substance abuse, but I do wonder what role Riehl's tour in Iraq played in this tragic shoot out with the Douglas County sheriffs.
My hunch is that he was dealing with a lot of rage toward an abusive male authority figure in his past-- which resulted in a psychotic fixation on a Lone Tree policeman. The young deputy killed in the shoot out had just started working for the local sheriff recently. Sad case.

So, now we learn that Riehl was perceived as a menacing right wing nut on the campus of the University of Wyoming Law School up in Laramie.
In fact, students were advised to call the police if Riehl showed up on the campus.
Another blown, high-risk case resulting in a shooting.

Notice that Deputy Dogfart has expressed no indignation about a white Republicon gun nut shooting 5 cops in Highlands Ranch.
If the guy had been black, Mexican, or Muslim, we would have seen at least a dozen Mutt posts.
