Some interesting leaders roughly 1/3 through conference play (Purdue & Ohio State/Saint Mary's after upset at Gonzaga last night/Stanford): www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/standingsUF leads the SEC by 1/2 game due to having played 1 more game than Auburn so far. UF and UK play Saturday night at Rupp. It's incredibly hard to win in that environment, but the Gators will give it the good ole college try.

I'm curious why you ignored auburn re: early league leaders. they remind me a lot of bob huggins' teams at cincinnati when he was there; physical, stingy defense and dominant on the boards. especially when it was just a few months ago pearl appeared in deep trouble re fbi investigation... tigers might be 'the' surprise team of d-1 so far this year.

Auburn is a surprise team, but they lost at bama Tuesday night and are 1/2 game out. I would have had them as the surprise leader of the SEC had they not lost to the tide. Bruce Pearl has that team humming. Maybe the BIG surprise is that Michigan State isn't in first place to this point. tOSU is a stunner as you said. Was Purdue predicted first or second in conference coming in? If so, I shouldn't have had them as a surprise leader. What was up with the boilers when they lost back to back home games against Tennessee and Western Kentucky? I haven't seen Saint Mary's, but I have seen Gonzaga, a team I believe will end up in the top 10 before the season is over. They would have moved into the top 10 this coming week had they held serve at home. Saint Mary's is a fine team/program, but the upset at Gonzaga last night was as huge as it was unexpected as Saint Mary's hardly ever wins there. I do watch some west coast hoops. UF played and handily beat Stanford. That's why I have them as a surprise that they are tied with Arizona.

Saint Mary's is a fine team/program, but the upset at Gonzaga last night was as huge as it was unexpected as Saint Mary's hardly ever wins there. I had $55 on st mary;'s +7 last night. gonzaga beat them 3 times last yr, and I thought it was a good spot for the gaels to keep it close. I was mildly surprised they won, but not at all that they were very competitive. again, go back and look at the standings down thru the years in the wcc. as for not winning at gonzaga... last night was st. mary;'s 3rd win in spokane since '12. the big 10 is not deep ion terms of quality this year, but the boilers being at/near the top is definitely not a surprise, except for those who continually overlook them. I don't recall anyone not having sparty at the top of their predictions, but every one I saw who covers big 10 hoops had purdue 2nd. the program has won more regular season league titles than any other school, and has the highest overall win pct fwiw. this purdue team represented the u.s. in the world university games tournament this summer and finished 2nd, vs competition much older/experienced. that was an indicator that this team is pretty strong to me.

looks like the B10 might sneak 5 teams in depending on how nebraska does the in the B10 tourney.
