it is no longer a joke. i think lebron signing with the 76ers makes complete sense. here is why:
1. he should stay in the eastern conference as it almost guarantees him a trip to the finals. the raptors are good but it's obvious they overachieve and their success is not sustainable. the celtics are good but they lack the superstars to really make a push in the playoffs. outside these two teams, the 76ers have shown the most promise of competing to win the conference.
2. philly is super close to manhattan. lebron is obviously big into his business ventures. there is no better place in the world than new york city. new york city is the best city in the world. everything lebron does off the court would be magnified so much more if he's living in new york. you can get to and from new york and philly in no time with private jets and high speed rail service.
3. lebron can't join a contender like golden state/houston or else he'll be perceived the same way durant was. durant took a lot of criticism for joining a contender rather than leading a team on his own. 4. ben simmons and lebron share the same agent and are noticeably friendly off the court. they are in each others instagram photos all the time. whether they share a genuine connection or this is a marketing campaign by their savy agent remains to be seen.
5. with ben simmons and embiid both younger than 25, lebron could coast until the playoffs.
6. 76ers still have trade asset to improve the team the way lebron sees fit. besides markelle fultz, the 76ers have the sacramento kings #1 pick next year. therefore, if lebron wanted a buddy to join him, 76ers have both the cap space and trade assets to accommodate it. they could have a lineup of simmons, paul george, lebron, joel embiid, etc. and the 76ers would still have a deep bench with quality role players like dario saric, robert convington, tj mcconnell, etc.
