It's Florida State vs. Washington for all the marbles. While I'd prefer that a PAC team didn't win, I can't root for Florida State. That being the case, I'm going to root for a Washington. Go Huskies! Woof, Woof, Woof! I watched both games yesterday. I felt like the crew were sort of pulling for UCLA, which struck me as a little odd. I mean, UCLA is one of the goliaths of college softball. They'd won 99 games in a row when leading after the 5th inning until Game 1 yesterday. FSU has faced elimination 6 times now during this NCAA regional. And here we are in the finals. The ACC has never had a team in the finals before. FSU has never won an NCAA softball championship. Tons of stuff to root for....just struck me as odd. I get it trn, that's the way it was on Friday night between UF and UCLA too. They did admit the egregious call at the plate that turned the game, but the announcers were in UCLA's camp. In fairness, they also laughed and snickered about the umps strike zone too. However, on balance, they favored UCLA. The home plate ump clearly favored UCLA.

As for the missed call at home plate, that would have been tough, even the announcers thought the girl was safe until IR showed her out. I can forgive the ump on that as it was so close. My disappointment in that particular umpire was his ball/strike calls at the plate. I thought he was pretty inconsistent there. IR isn't going to change that. IR would also slow the game down. One of the great things about women's softball is how quick the game goes, there's no IR, no scratching your balls, no repeated throws to first base, it's a quickly played game with a welcome lack of interruptions. As for Oklahoma having "home field" advantage, I suppose there are fans who would think that is an unfair advantage and possibly they have a legitimate complaint, but the games have to be played somewhere and I'm thankful they are not in LA or Florida. Oklahoma City has great facilities and the surrounding area have a lot of avid fans and is somewhat in middle America so I am ok with this series being played there. The men always play in Omaha and if the Cornhuskers or Creighton Blue Jays would make it to the College World Series, someone would complain. We are a funny bunch, if our team wins, everything is usually hunky dory, if they lose, we find something to complain about. Disagree, everybody on the field saw it as an out except the home plate. The tag was made 6" to 1 foot before the foot hit the plate. The ump was in perfect position to call the out, but refused to do so. On the SEC Network this morning, the announcers and color folks agreed that it was an egregious call, maybe they read my comments, and instant replay needs to be installed on at least plays at the plate, fair or out, and homeruns. Whatever softball decides to do in adding instant replay, the game will be better for it. Blown calls intentionally or otherwise, I think the home plate ump was corrupt, cannot be allowed to change games. The integrity of the game should take precedents over the speed of the game when an important call needs to be reviewed. It wasn't me complaining about OKC. Harry introduced the subject as a dig for Bryan who doesn't give a rats ass about any sport outside of LSU football and baseball.

All three of the lady announcers agreed with the call until they saw the IR so everyone on the field did not feel the runner was out. It was a close call and although it was the wrong call, I can easily see why the ump got it wrong.

It was a close call and although it was the wrong call, I can easily see why the ump got it wrong. Correction, the announcers were up in the broadcast booth. Maybe their bias took them to safe before they should have said anything. Trn said he noticed the announcers favored UCLA when they played FSU. The Gators' coaches and players on the field, some surrounding the play, all saw it as a clear out and vociferously complained about the call. They didn't need a replay to confirm the out they saw in live action. The throw was perfect, the catcher was up the line allowing a path to the plate, and the sweep tag was perfect. The only thing not perfect was the umpire's call who was in perfect position to call the out, but refused to do so. He is a west coast ump living in Los Angeles so I smell corruption.

Little did you know that a bang-bang play at the plate is egregious and corrupt when it goes against you.

I stated earlier that I thought the announcers were biased in favor of UCLA, however, I think the ump called the play the way he saw it. I don't think he was by any means the best ump I have seen but not because of this call, but because of his inconsistency on ball/strike calls. The announcers initially thought the girl was safe, and I don't recall any players objecting to the umps call. The throw was perfect and IR shows the girl was out, there is never a game of baseball or softball called perfectly. "What if's" in softball is an endless discussion. By the way, whatever I felt about the announcers, they in no way affected the outcome of any of the games.

I'm not sure I'd go with the umpiring being biased. There were a few calls that went FSU's way yesterday, so I can't go there. As I said thought....in sports, there is usually sort of a soft spot for the underdog, which FSU was undoubtedly the underdog yesterday. Even when the score was 12-4, and the UCLA gal hit the homer to avoid getting run ruled, I kept hearing comments about it might be the start of a comeback, and how great this team is, etc. Just felt like a bit of a slight. Shrug....doesn't matter though. Hopefully we stay as on fire as we have been, although if the pattern holds, we lose tonight. Only to come back and win tomorrow and Wednesday.

If replay is instituted, it will be because of the UF/UCLA game.

Florida State 1 Washington 0
The nolies lead the best of three 1-0, gave the Huskies some of their own medicine with great pitching and defense.

Go Noles.
Pitcher was lights out again tonight and our hitting was just too good.
Plus they are fun as hell to watch.
I’ll celebrate any championship for FSU, but I’ve enjoyed watching a lot of these softball games.

I’ll celebrate any championship for FSU, but I’ve enjoyed watching a lot of these softball games. Congrats to FSU for eliminating the PAC. Eliminating Oregon, UCLA, and Washington was an accomplishment worthy of a national championship. It's amazing that it took a national championship win for you discover college softball. It has grown into a terrific women's sport and it is only going to get better. I actually enjoy the softball games more than the baseball games because they have a faster paced action and usually end in 2 hours instead of the 3 1/2 hours for a baseball game. I really dislike the way the ESPN got behind the PAC this year. The ACC won it all, the B1G has some very good softball teams, the Big 12 had the 2 time defending national champion, and the SEC placed every team into the NCAA tourney. I think it is safe to say the PAC will never again dominate college softball as they did for years before the sport grew from being a regional sport into a national sport.

To be honest, I’ve watched games in the past....FSU games, and for whatever reason just couldn’t get into it. This year has been different. I found myself even watching games FSU wasn’t playing. Was just a really fun event.
