I spent my senior year in college learning about the horrible reputation of the 12th century clergy associated with the church. They were literally the objects of societal ridicule for their...shall we call it..."randy reputation". Enter Pope Benedict and the Council of Trent which introduced celibacy, an idea that Martin Luther ridiculed as foreign to human instinct.. Fast forward 800 years, and here we are... Pretty easy to see who was right and who was wrong...

Which 12th century "church" are you referring to, Walter, the (Eastern Orthodox) Church of the ancient Patriarchates of Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem, or the (Western) Latin Church of the ancient Patriarchate of Rome?
Recall that the (Western) Patriarchate of Rome separated from the (Eastern Orthodox) Church in the Great Schism of 1054 A.D.
The mandatory celibacy of the priesthood was a post-Schism innovation of the Latin West-- along with the post-Schism concepts of a monarchical Roman Papacy, College of Cardinals, the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc.
Celibacy of the priesthood was never the norm in the (Eastern Orthodox) Church.
It is truly amazing how few Americans-- even intellectuals-- understand the actual history of the (Orthodox) Church in the Levant, Greece, Eastern Europe, and Russia.
The three major branches of Christianity on the planet are; 1) Orthodox, 2) Roman Catholic, and 3) Protestant.

Jesus Christ's church is NOT a denomination. It is the collection of true Christians who worship Him and follow His word. "The church" is the PEOPLE, not an organized heirarchy with names bestowed on different ones by humans, or a structure.
