just finished watching it. thought it was extremely well done. have to admit I'd forgotten that neil reed, the iu player who came forward and said knight choked him during a practice, the incident that had a huge impact in his firing, had died so young, of a heart attack at age 36, during his tenure as a hs hoops coach. it showed how, both brilliant and boorish, bobby was, and how downright scary it was, how some fans reacted so strongly to the accusations of knight's verbal/physical abuse, to the point of threatening the iu president, reed, and professors/staff who went public with their stories.
that was 20 years ago, and unfortunately for some people their reactions to their sports heroes' failures hasn't changed today.
think I'd shared this a few years ago... in my first job at whiz-tv in zanesville, ohio (that's right, a tv station in zanesville, ohio) in the early 80s, knight accompanied former tosu coach fred taylor, for whom knight played, to an event nearby and afterwards agreed to be interviewed by our sports director. being an alum and hoops fan, I hung around to listen. it really wasn't much of an interview at all; knight and taylor simply talked to each other about their days together, their coaching carers, the sport, the characters, et al, for over an hour. we ran excerpts of it for a week. knight was absolutely effervescent. incredibly engaging on camera, funny, friendly to everyone he met at the station (as well as the fundraiser at which they appeared earlier). amazing how his personality could quickly do a 180 when triggered, and how little he ended up caring about those left in his wake.
