Izzo is right that society is softer. That said, coaches don’t get to shove players around. That crosses a line for me. Admittedly, it’s a thin line.

obviously izzo is old school. i watched him a lot on the sidelines at the msu-tosu game last weekend, and the difference between he and holtman in how they interacted w/players, officials, was noticeable. so his reaction to the suspension isn't surprising. what's disappointing to me is the embellishing and hyperbole he goes into, which is way overboard. even though the physical contact between chambers and his player isn't violent, it certainly crosses a line between teacher and student (isn't that what coaching still is?). you can be 100% authoritative without resorting to that kind of reaction. was suspending the coach for a game the right move? imho i think a warning would have been retribution enough here, again since it was a push, even though it was clearly done in anger. but i agree with you; using equal dose of intellect and emotion to motivate and educate, as opposed to physical force, is a sign of evolution in the right direction, not the wrong one.

Izzo is right that society is softer. I should clarify... I don't think this incident illustrates that society is soft, as Izzo suggests. Society, as a whole, is much softer than it used to be but this would have been wrong 10 years ago, 20 years ago or 50 years ago. That society is more aware now that it is wrong is definitely a good thing.

I had some old school guys, but none ever pulled that kind of shit. That said, there is fine line.

I did have a coach who once or twice grabbed me by the arm and physically" walked me over to where I was supposed to be on the floor. But, he wasn't dragging or pushing or any of that other bullshit, that's the line I was talking about.

Perhaps so but w the understanding that today is a different world today, not too long ago verbal corrective coaching was a bit courser. It IS different today. And they were aware of it then but parents chose to look the other way. It's changed. Of that there is no doubt. For every John Wooden there were a dozen Bobby Knights.

bs suspension, izzo is right. Never addressed this in earlier post, but I also don't agree with the suspension.
