Wow. Eye-opening article. Thanks for posting it. The thesis explains a lot of things that, on the surface, did not make sense about Trump's base.

Don’t know if his theory is right or wrong, but like you I did find it interesting as hell. It's a very interesting thesis that had not occurred to me before.
It also fits with Republican Peter Wehner's incisive analyses of Trump's "theology" -- which is, basically, Nietzschean, antithetical to traditional Christianity.
Although this article is about disillusioned Protestant Evangelicals, it also reminded me of a truly astonishing Pew Research Center stat that I read about a few years ago. If I remember it correctly, roughly 10% of ALL U.S. CITIZENS are non-church-going ex-Roman Catholics.
I noticed that phenomenon in my years of psychiatric private practice-- many of my former patients were disillusioned, ex-Roman Catholics.

Don’t know if his theory is right or wrong, but like you I did find it interesting as hell. fascinating. and quite plausible imho. and a little scary. what stood out to me was the writer’s research indicating that trump’s support was inversely proportional to someone’s education, community living where the critical mass attended church, and level of societal trust. i’d always thought that trump was filling some kind of vacuum for his almost ardent supporters, but never would have associated it with the decline of churches and church goers in rural America. quite interesting.

That 'societal trust' issue also speaks to the connection between Trump supporter and ardent NRA and 2nd A. supporter. Thinking one needs a gun at the ready at all times does not comport much with 'trust' of one's surroundings.

Thinking one needs a gun at the ready at all times does not comport much with 'trust' of one's surroundings. There is a very good reason for "In God We Trust."
However, God doesn't expect us to make Him go all the work, so He made man smart enough to invent gunpowder and all the other goodies that go with it.
Ask the presumably unarmed hall monitor in the Baltimore school today how much he trusted his surroundings. Ask him how much that "trust" worked for him.
You gun haters are FOOLS.

It was THEIR country. Do you blame them?
Oh wait, you do.
Just like then, you think we should allow illegal foreigners to take over our country NOW.
P.S. The Indians didn't have GUNS at first, which gave the occupying white man the advantage. Hmmmmmmmmm ................
You really ARE stupid, not learning from history.
