Cinco de Mayo has long been celebrated in many parts of the American Southwest.
It is a celebration of the victory of outnumbered troops of the fledgling Republic of Mexico over French imperialist troops in the Battle of Puebla, near Mexico City, in 1862.
The holiday has long been celebrated in Mexico and former Mexican provinces that were ceded to the U.S. prior to the Civil War-- Tejas, New Mexico, southern Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and California.
Prior to the U.S. invasion and occupation of northern Mexico in 1846, (including California) the independent Republic of Mexico had viewed the U.S. as an exemplary democratic republic that, like Mexico, had liberated itself from European colonialism.
