If you guys remember, some months ago I posted an article about "pink slime", aka "lean beef trimmings" and the prevalence of their use. In case you've forgotten, that stuff is essentially whatever crap falls on the floor in the butchering process, washed with an ammonia compound, defatted, colored and sold as a sort of pink sludge as an additive to hamburger.

There's another subject of some concern to me, and that is the use of biologically altered foods. Generally, we're talking about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), which are foods that are genetically altered, or foods from animals which have been fed antibiotics or hormones.
In either case, we're talking about food that has been altered from the way God and Nature made it to be primarily for the marketability of the product.
Now I'm no chicken-little about this stuff, but it has become so commonly used that I have begun to alter my eating habits to try to cut back on my exposure to these foods. If you've got 20 minutes, check out this video, in which one woman speaks about her "awakening" to this subject.

Meanwhile, one of the reasons I'm doing more and more scratch cooking is to eliminate many of the myriad of chemicals used in pre-prepared foods. For example;
A Boston Market frozen dinner (my wife's) which had chicken-fried steak and country gravy , potatoes and green beans in butter sauce had a list of 67 ingredients, including some GMOs.
My homemade chicken-fried steak with country gravy, potatoes and green beans in butter sauce......16 ingredients, including the 5 from the commercially produced butter. Guess which one is better?
Now I know that sometimes convenience counts. My wife wants that meal to toss in the microwave when she's hungry and in a hurry. And eating one every now and then won't hurt anybody. But do you REALLY want to eat all that extra crap if you don't have to?
Flotus, pull out that dinner bag you just used for your "alfredo" and tell us....how many ingredients?
No condemnation here, guys. Just some food for thought.
