The U.S. Needs to Bring Back the Fairness Act
by W.F. Wunderlich
October 2, 2019
One of the things that has become painfully obvious about the United States during the past quarter century is that the country has been fragmented, beguiled, and weakened by the advent of de-regulated right wing propaganda in the U.S. mainstream media.
Granted, politically partisan U.S. newspapers have existed since the days of Martin Van Buren and Henry Clay-- but, in the age of television, the Congress had the wisdom to implement the Fairness Act, requiring major television corporations to give equal time to opposing political views on critical political issues.
Ronald Reagan and Congress tragically abrogated the Fairness Act in 1988, in the days when televised news consisted of rational choices between the likes of Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, and the McNeil Lehrer News Hour.
Since then, the right wing Australian media tycoon Rupert Murdoch acquired U.S. citizenship and established a massive U.S. propaganda empire, consisting of Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, the Washington Examiner, and other disinformation outlets.
Exhibit A. 60% of Republicans in a recent Monmouth University poll did not know that Donald Trump had spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July about "investigating" Joe Biden, in exchange for receiving Congressionally designated U.S. military aid for the Ukraine's conflict with Russia in the Donbas region!
This is a serious problem for the U.S. -- systematic disinformation and censorship of critically important news by major mass media corporations.
It has played a direct role in fragmenting the American people, and enabling serious corruption in government institutions, including the White House and the State Department, among others. As the famous Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein said two years ago, "If Nixon had had Fox 'News' (promoting disinformation and censoring the real news) he would have survived the Watergate scandal."
Exhibit B. Joe Biden's campaign recently wrote to several U.S. corporate media CEOs requesting equal time to respond to false statements being broadcast on mainstream media by Rudy Giuliani and other Trump propagandists, including, sadly, a number of dishonest Republican Senators and Congressmen.
Hopefully, the Democrats will be able to re-establish the Fairness Act after 2020 and put an end to the Age of Right Wing Corporate Propaganda in the U.S. mainstream media. The survival of our Constitutional democracy my depend upon it.

Though I understand your pining for the old days, the media landscape is entirely different today. BITD, there were three networks and newspapers. Today, I can get my news from Uncle Bill's All-Night News Service if I want to now.
It is not a landscape that CAN be regulated, and frankly, it shouldn't be.

Cable and internet "news" has proliferated since 1988. But, interestingly, there has been a HUGE, simultaneous consolidation of mainstream U.S. media corporations. As I recall, there are now only SIX mega media corporations controlling most of the U.S. mainstream media. Like all for-profit, corporate behemoths-- including utilities, banks, etc. -- these Robber Baron media moguls need to be regulated to protect the public welfare. How many times do Americans have to forget the lessons of the Gilded Age before they finally remember that unregulated, laissez faire capitalism always ends in disasters?

Would The Fairness Act, Part 2, require that CNN give President Trump equal time when Don Lemon spends an hour each night calling President Trump a racist? How about when CNN News during the daily "news" programs air half-truths and make erroneous remarks that are proven wrong, would CNN have to give President Trump equal time to "correct" the lie? I'm all for "fairness" when it is fair for both sides.

We could have the Hannity-Lemon hour where each gets 3 sets of 10 minutes to bash the other's POV. It would be great fun to watch.

Rachel Maddow squaring off against Giuliani on MSNBC... "Rudy, you ignorant, cross-dressing slut!"

The New Yorker would absolutely DESTROY the Baton Rouge boy.
