Californians may soon be able to eat roadkill Today 9:39 AM
By Leada Gore | lgore@al.com Californians are on the road to being able to eat animals that are accidentally run over.
Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill authorizing the state’s Fish and Game Commission to develop a pilot program that would issue permits to anyone who wants to take roadkill home to eat. Before they could receive a permit, residents would have to record the “location, type and description of the salvaged animal, the date and time of salvage, the basic characteristics of the incident and the description of the vehicle involved…and the destination where the carcass will be transported,” the Mercury News reported.
Deer, elk, antelopes and wild pigs will be covered by the permits, which must be sought within 24 hours of a collision.
According to the bill, more than 20,000 deer alone are hit on California roadways each year.
