Today marks 30 years since Hank Gathers collapsed and died during a conference tournament game. What transpired a few weeks later with LMU's run to the Elite 8 was almost as improbable as Villanova's championship a few years earlier. Amazing team and an even better tribute to their fallen teammate. Who could forget Bo Kimble's left handed free throw in honor of his childhood friend? Or Per Stemur and Jeff Fryer absolutely lighting it up behind the arc.
Side note to LMU's run, the talent and the teams that were in that Elite 8 that year was incredible.

I remember seeing the bulletin come across in the newsroom, and the video later that night. he'd made a play at the basket, and one of the camera operators shooting on the floor stayed on him, and saw him collapse, with no outwardly visible cause. it was stunning based on his physique, and more stunning when after a moment he obviously had lost consciousness. in the ncaa's lmu took on a real good michigan team, defending national champs, and put up about 150 points on them. in a 40 minute game. it was an otherworldly performance during an unreal run.

I re-watched the game today and amazingly, it was still a 7 point game with 14 minutes to go. Then Jeff Fryer happened... LOL In watching the game, it seemed as though LMU was shooting a very low % so I looked up the stats and see that they actually shot 55% for the game, which surprised me. Kimble didn't have a great game shooting the ball (especially from 3) but made up a good chuck of his points at the line, where he went 14-17. As a team, their bread and butter was the 3-point shot and they went 21-40 in the game, while UM went 4-13. More importantly, they made huge 3s while putting the dagger in Michigan midway through the 2nd half on. Really entertaining game for a number of reasons so it was fun to watch again.

I was happy for him to see that run and the way he had them playing that season. ahead of his time. wasn't long before coach k saw the math %'s and had duke shooting more 3's.

Remembered that day as well__also remembered ESPN replaying the video ad nauseam of Hank walking, stubbling and falling to the ground. No need to do that on day 2.
