How about a low pass with burners?
As "advanced" as the jet was, its cockpit was still loaded with steam gauges. No digital displays or any of that stuff.
And they leaked fuel when on the ground. There had to be gaps between the fuel tank panels for metal expansion when the thing heated up at high speed. They didn't take off with full tanks anyway, because of the added weight stressing the airframe on takeoff.

A freaking beast of a ship. That bird was smoking when he lit up the tail feathers. I saw the Nine P Nine, the B17 that crashed last year, do a fly by down the runway maybe 100 or so feet off the pavement do a 90 degree rotation. Just amazing to see what these rd big birds can do.

And if it jammed in a position that blocked the door and was in the extended position, the gunner would be crushed when the thing landed. My favorite WWII airplane is the one I happen to be focused on at any one time. P-47, P-51, P-38, B-25, ANJ/AT6 (advanced trainer for all pilots), SBD, F4F/FM2, TBD/TBM, F6F, PBY --- they are ALL cool.

The neighbor that lives behind me is 97, who only recently got his French Legion of Merit medal, and a former B-17 pilot. Doesn't talk a lot about it but one story he shared motivated me to stand up and cheer for fighter pilots (incl by F-14 brother). It seems he was limping badly, flying low and slow, back across the channel, from an op, being chased by four German fighters, lining up for the kill. No one noticed a cpl of P-51s cruising about, out for some flight time. A joy ride. They saw the sitrep and sprung to action. In short order, splash 4 "Krauts", as he described them. P-51 drivers finished their biz, waggled their wings, saluted him and moved on in search of more "fun". Different breed fighter pilots.

Yeah that was another great one, too. The gullwing design was because of the huge propeller chosen for the plane. If it had been a straight midwing design, the landing gear would have had to be extraordinarily long, and possibly too weak to handle the controlled crash commonly known as a carrier landing.

And yes, the guys who manned the lower turrent as well as the tail gunner had to be a special breed. I had a buddy in college who was a nose gunner on a chopper in Vietnam. Long story short, he had a new green pilot who decided to double back to look at something rather than just letting him blast it. Next thing he saw was a trail coming up at them. They were about 50 feet above the treetops and he released his belts and dove out. Chopper exploded above him and he crashed through the limbs of the trees wrecking his knee. But he survived.
