Well, he's really escalated from two blasts in the air. I'm not sure I could trust him as President.

Biden is a total idiot.
I have a challenge for anyone in the leg-shooting camp.
Get a paintball gun and a friend dressed in one of those protective suits. Holster the paintball gun, or give it a good simulation. Have the friend hold a rubber knife, facing you 25 feet away. Tell the friend to run at you, unannounced, with the goal of stabbing you. When it dawns on you that you are being attacked with a deadly weapon, draw and fire and TRY to hit him in the leg before he gets to you.
Now I haven't tried this, but I'll bet 9 out of 10 times, you get stabbed and your attacker is paint-free.

Interesting article on the 21 ft rule. gunbelts.com/blog/is-the-21-foot-rule-really-a-thing/ Because you're set up in some kind of "test" or training sit, unannounced means some but not a lot because it is a training sit and you're expecting something, soon. No two sits are the same though; it's still about training and practice. Some of the 7, 10, 12 yrd rule is about legal liabilities. For me, and I think they mention it in the article, a step or two back, after you realize what's happening, usually provides you w the necessary time. Unless you trip. There are a lot of variables involved in all of this.
A uniformed police officer is going to a situation knowing that something may go wrong, and his weapon is in a holster openly carried on his hip, easily accessible. I am going to the grocery store, knowing there is a sale on beanie-weenies, and MY gun is carried concealed. When the bad guy decides to start a cleanup on aisle 3, I am not expecting that at all. My reaction time is going to be slower than the cop's, for no other reason than I am not expecting a fight in the produce section.
Both the cop and I should have to consider the background, but there will be no time to do so in reality. We'll be getting tunnel vision anyway.
My martial arts training tells me to do something not considered here.
Don't back up, don't fall down hoping for a successful upward shot while on your back. Hell, he could still fall on top of you and stab the shit out of you while he is taking his sweet time bleeding out.
What to do? SIDESTEP. If he is charging like a bull, play the matador. I'll take my chances that the enraged or deranged full speed attacker won't be able to change his direction before I can then shoot him. Maybe it won't work. Maybe I'll be somewhere where there is no room to sidestep. But I will try if I can.
I've been in a situation where I was backing straight up. I tripped on fell over the railroad tracks behind me. Luckily my attacker was only a very angry German Shepherd with 10" long fangs. At least that's how they looked. I've told this story before. Before my butt hit the ground falling backwards, my S&W Model 19 was out of its holster, coming to bear on the dog, and when I hit the ground, I was squeezing the trigger. A sheriff's deputy jumped in front of me and punched the dog (he was crazy), and somehow I eased trigger pressure and did NOT shoot him. The dog decided Joe was crazier than HE was, and surrendered. Or something. I really don't remember that part.
And yes, if you trip while backing up, you are now startled by something you hadn't expected, thinking "what the fluck??" and then trying to re-focus on the threat. Not a good place to be.

Why the leg? Why not the foot? Trigger finger, trigger finger! Shoot the finger!
If he has a knife, hit the tendon that controls his thumb and he will have to drop it.
