The infamous "Hunger Winter" of 1944-45 was worse...far worse. The Americans and British in 1944 came this close to a successful liberation of the Netherlands, but unfortunately their paratroopers' drop onto the last bridge at Arnhem landed on top of a Nazi Waffen SS unit which succeeded in defeating them and rounding up the captured into POW camps. The Germans then ruthlessly unloaded on the Dutch people who had welcomed their liberators with public demonstrations and all the assistance that an occupied people could give. Thousands of them starved as the Nazis vacuumed up all available food supplies and an unforgiving winter did the rest. A tragic story. Vindex Georgia Bulldogs
