CNN will close CNN Airport Network on March 31, 2021. For thirty years, CNN has broadcast selected news and opinion shows in 58 of the busiest airports in the United States. Not only did they broadcast in these airports, they actually paid airport authorities small fees to obtain exclusive rights to the airports. CNN installed TVs in bars, dining areas, waiting areas, gates, and anywhere people gathered. CNN also controlled the TVs. No one in any area had control of the volume or channel selection or could turn off the TV. CNN even controlled the volume from a remote location. CNN did not show any news of airline crashes or other airport disasters, of course. CNN sold advertising tailored to the cities served by the airports. In the last few years many people, travelers included, have been getting their news from other sources on their mobile devices and don't watch the propaganda forced on the formerly captive audience. What this will do to their ratings is unknown, but losing the forced exposure to not only American travelers, but also international travelers passing through these airports can only lead to a steady decline in viewership.

When CNN first started in 1980 most everyone in the news and TV industry did not expect it to succeed. Even the average TV viewer laughed at the thought: "Who would want to listen to news 24 hours a day?" People in the Atlanta area would watch morning or evening news on CNN, then see Bernard Shaw or Peter Arnett or John Hickman at a restaurant or department or grocery store, and they were just like us! And Ted Turner was just loved by all Atlantans so TV channels switched to CNN for news in the middle of the day, between soap operas. But CNN hung on until striking it big during the Gulf War. As Operation Desert Storm hit Baghdad, Shaw, Arnett, and John Holliman reported live from the Rashid Hotel via satellite phone and live camera footage of the bombs and missiles. I stayed up all night watching, kept a TV on CNN at work during that first day, and back to CNN at home at night. After that week CNN became the first choice of people around the world for news. Ted turner ran CNN as a politically neutral network even though he had evolved from a Young Republican to a flaming liberal with a love of protecting the environment. After the merger of CNN with Time Warner in 1996, Turner remained with Time Warner as vice chairman and head of the news division. He clashed with AOL Time Warner after that merger in 2001 saw CNN news shows become more opinionated and openly liberal.
