Disturbing story in the Washington Post today about the "Evangelical treatment center" in Atlanta where Long was in "treatment" for "sexual addiction." This "treatment center" was founded and run by a guy named Blankenship who claimed to be an "ex-gay" specializing in gay "conversion therapy." Blankenship later came out as gay and left the center. Since then, it has been managed by another self-professed "ex-gay" man who earned a masters degree from Wheaton College after getting out of prison. Speaking as a (retired) psychiatrist, the worst thing any therapist can do in dealing with people's sexual issues (or addictions) is to reinforce their shame and self-condemnation-- as opposed to helping them understand and empathize with their painful internal, all-too-human struggles, while encouraging them to avoid acting out in ways that are harmful to themselves or others. From what I read in the WaPo article, that is not the approach used at this Evangelical "treatment center." |
