Sad day in Indy & for all open wheel fans..
Bobby Unser, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and part of the only pair of brothers to win "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," has died. He was 87.
He died Sunday at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, of natural causes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Monday. Unser won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981.
"He is part of the Mount Rushmore of Indy," said Dario Franchitti, another three-time Indy 500 winner.
Younger brother Al Unser is one of only three drivers to win the Indy 500 four times -- 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987. The Unser family tradition stretched to Al Unser's son, Al Unser Jr., who won the Indy 500 in 1992 and 1994.

He and his entire family were terrific race car drivers and great ambassadors for the sport.

Remembered that around the mid-90s he got lost in Co, near his NM ranch, snowmobiling, when a really bad storm hit. Lost use of snowmobiles and almost bought it, w a buddy. Easy to do when you're in the middle of nowhere and the only thing you can see for miles & miles & miles is MORE miles & miles & miles...in fact, what Northern NM is famous for. He wasn’t trained or prepared but w his grit he made it through w a bit of luck. For some another opportunity to lead the way. |
