Awesome 18 minute video by Mark Felton
JMB was a genius.
It's fascinating how little has changed in firearms and ammunition technology in the last 80-100 years.
Evolutionary advances? Yes. Revolutionary advances? No.

Awesome 18 minute video by Mark Felton JMB was a genius. It's fascinating how little has changed in firearms and ammunition technology in the last 80-100 years. Evolutionary advances? Yes. Revolutionary advances? No. The only real innovation in modern firearms that I can think of are the striker-fired pistols, and thanks to Gaston Glock, they are everywhere now.
Interesting video, and I own two of the types on that list. I have two Lee-Enfields and one authentic copy of the 1911A-1 made by High Standard. Its parts are perfectly interchangeable with the Colt Gov't Model. Colt does make a copy of the 1911A-1, too. The Mauser design is probably the basis for more bolt action rifles than any other design in the world. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that P-38's are still in service by military and police somewhere, too. I love mine, and Beretta copied the design when they came out with their Model 92. And we see that the Russians build great military weapons that are purposely designed with simplicity and reliability in mind. The AK-47 certainly reigns supreme in that category, even though it doesn't qualify for this video.
I WAS surprised to learn that the P-35 is chambered in .40S&W too. It's certainly rugged enough t handle that round. If my memory hasn't failed me completely, the old Browning was the first centerfire semiauto handgun I ever fired. I was just a kid, but my older brother owned one, and I would shoot his.
Thanks for that video!

I'm on the prowl for good 1911. I would love to have an old Gold Cup but can't afford one. Maybe one of the newer Colts would be a good choice? There just might be a High Standard in my future after things settle down...

There just might be a High Standard in my future after things settle down... I have a 1974 Colt Combat Commander. It is a great gun, but look up their prices on Gunbroker and such. This one is EXACTLY like mine, except for the mfg year. This one is a 1982 model.
My High Standard 1911A-1 shoots every bit as well as my Colt, for a far cheaper price. When you buy a Colt, you are paying for the name only, UNLESS you buy one of their top line guns, and even THEY aren't good enough for anything more than self-defense and plinking. You are not going to see a factory Gold Cup, Kimber, or anything else winning any pistol matches. Since you most likely want a 1911 for fun shooting and self defense, go with the High Standard. They are even parkerized like the old 1911A-1's. The only difference is the HS has a lowered ejection port, and a chromed barrel around the chamber area to allow the chrome to show in the ejection port. G.I. barrels are fully parkerized.
Buy the High Standard, and use the money you save to buy ammo, or more Fireflys.

No. Depending on the country, FAs 130 yrs old are still in use. The Mosins first built in 1890s are still actively used in the Mid-East.
