It looks like Juneteenth -- commemorating the official end of slavery in Texas (and the U.S.) on June 19, 1865 -- will become a new Federal holiday.
This could be awkward for Governor Greg Abbott and the Republicon screwballs in Texas who just passed a law banning the teaching of the history of slavery and racism in Texas.

The guy helped his fellow Dixiecrats stonewall any civil rights legislation in Congress for years, then he did an about face and played a major role in pushing Congress to pass the historic Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965. In fact, without LBJ's well known legislative strong arm tactics, neither bill would have become law. But why the volte face by LBJ after JFK's murder in Dallas? IMO, it was mainly about LBJ wooing the liberal, northern faction of the Democratic Party for '64 and '68. |

A lot of black people from my old neighborhood in Denver used to celebrate it, even back in the 70s. (Many of the black people in northeast Denver were from families that had emigrated to Colorado from Texas.) |
