WEEK 13
“Have you got a woman in here?” “If I haven't, I've wasted 30 minutes of valuable time… Look, you've got it all wrong. This is my aunt. She's come to talk over some old family matters.” “I wish I had an aunt that looked like that.” “Well, take it up with your uncle.”
no clue on movie this week
THE GAMES
THURSDAY 1. (9-2) #8 MISSISSIPPI AT (7-4) MISSISSIPPI STATE -1, (OPEN +2). loss msu is 13-1 ats in the 2nd of back/back home games lately, despite being just 3-7 ats at home the last 10 games. the rebels have been a little less prolific on offense since matt corral has corralled his running (just 105 yds last 5 games), whether due to injuries or preference. bulldogs also have double revenge for this year's egg bowl. mississippi state.
FRIDAY 2. (6-5) NORTH CAROLINA AT (8-3) #24 NORTH CAROLINA STATE -5.5, (OPEN -5). win host is just 2-6 ats lately in the series. unc qb sam howell sat out last week's win over wofford so he should be well rested. wolfpack is significantly better on defense, but the last time they went up vs a high octane offense they lost (42-45 to wake forest). nc state does have double revenge in their favor. but in their last 2 road games this year (at nd, at pitt) the tar heels played well enough to win both. entertainingly close. north carolina.
3. (6-5) WASHINGTON STATE AT (4-7) WASHINGTON +1, (OPEN -3). loss 2 programs who both let their head coaches go during the season in advance of this year's apple cup.I've watched the huskies play twice this year (at michigan, vs oregon) and was amazed how far the program has dropped in talent. that said, last week uw outgained colorado 426-183 yet thanks to 4 turnovers still lost 20-17. cougars have played well winning 5 of 7 coming into the game, going 7-1 ats. but they've all been as a dog. now they're a favorite in a series where they haven't covered since 2013 nor won since 2012. upset. washington.
4. (7-4) BOISE STATE AT (10-1) #22 SAN DIEGO STATE +2.5, (OPEN +2.5). win this game is being played not on saturday but friday at 9 am pst. idiotic. aztecs have averaged just 22 pts/game the last 6 weeks, while boise's offense has awakened in winning its last 4 games. but the home team's defense is still very good, and I love the scenario where a 10-1 team, who's won 3 straight but not covered any of the 3, is now getting points at home. san diego state.
SATURDAY
5. (10-1) #2 OHIO STATE AT (10-1) xICHIGAN +8, (OPEN -6). ugh-loss it's been a decade since ux has been favored vs tosu in ann arbor (won 40-34, -9). it's not often a 10-1 team comes off a 59-18 rout (vs terps) and hears the pundits all talking about, mostly, their opponent, adding even more motivation for the ugly helxets in this one. the last time the wolverines covered as a home dog was vs the bucks in '17 (20-31 loss, +13; they're 0-3 as home dogs since). the last 7 times they've played a .900+ opponent in the big house while getting points, they're 6-1 ats. hxxx. vs the 3 highest quality foes this year, the bucks have scored 28, 33 and 26 pts. but ryan day's road record as a head coach (12-0 su, 8-3-1 ats) is pretty impressive. so is the bucks' 7-1 ats record as road chalk of 8/less. on the other side, the wolverines are 0-8-1 ats as home dogs lately at +8/less. giving 8 pts to a 10-1 home dog is not normal for me. vs 6 common opponents, ux went 5-1 su/3-2-1 ats, w/a 194-121 point differential. tosu; 6-0 su/4-2 ats, 287-85. the ohio state university.
6. (11-0) #4 CINCINNATI AT (7-4) EAST CAROLINA +13.5, (OPEN -14) loss since 1980, unbeaten league road favorites game 10/later are 46-71-2 ats. uc stopped a 4 game ats slide w/the big win over smu, but the bearcats are just 1-8 ats vs .750/less foes off back/back wins, only 1-6 ats as away chalk of -8/more. ecu comes in off 4 straight wins, 4-0 ats as home dogs of 7+, the home team in this series has covered 5 straight, and the pirates are looking for revenge after a 55-17 beating in '20. upset alert. east carolina
7. (8-3) KENTUCKY AT (6-5) LOUISVILLE -2.5, (OPEN -2) win uk is getting pts despite winning the last 2 games in this rivalry by a combined 78 pts?? wow. I think the cards are getting a lot of love for hanging 62 on a duke team who gives up more pts than the hoops team does. I like their qb malik cunningham, but the 'cats have a much better d, and the 'ville's pass defense has been leaky lately. kentucky.
8. (5-6) VIRGINIA TECH AT (6-5) VIRGINIA -7.5, (OPEN -8) win tech has won 16 of the last 17 in the battle for the commonwealth cup. cavs qb brennan armstrong returned last week passing for 487 in a 38-48 loss at pitt. hokies need a win to get bowl eligible. don't think they get it, but vt's defense is good enough (and virginia's d poor enough) to make this close. virginia tech.
9. (8-3) #18 WISCONSIN AT (7-4) MINNESOTA +6.5, (OPEN +7). loss no fbs rivalry has been played more often than the battle for paul bunyan's ax. golden gophers lead the series 62-60-8 but will have their hands full stopping the badgers, who've won 7 straight behind 17 yr old phenom rb braelon allen, who in his previous 6 games was averaging 7.4 ypc before gashing nebraska for 228 (10.4 ypc). but in that 35-28 win, uw's d got gashed some (452 total yds) and minnesota's run game is just 23 yds/game behind wisconsin's. gophers are 8-2 ats as home dogs of 4+; badgers are 8-3 ats as road chalk of 8/less. wisconsin clinches the big 10 west.
10. (7-4) OREGON STATE AT (9-2) #11 OREGON -7, (OPEN -13). loss so how do the ducks' respond after their playoff hopes evaporated in utah last week? the pac 12 north is still on the line for uo. but the beavers are 6-1 ats as road dogs of 7+, 7-1 ats on the road vs .800+ foes. osu-west is also 10-1 ats getting points away from corvallis the last 2 years. oregon state.
11. (10-1) #5 NOTRE DAME AT (3-8) STANFORD +17.5, (OPEN +16). win the trees have won 7 of the last 11 in this series (tho nd has taken the last 2) and is 8-5 ats getting points at home. that said, their season has collapsed while the irish has methodically won/covered 6 straight since the cincy loss. notre dame.
12. (10-1) #10 OKLAHOMA AT (10-1) #7 OKLAHOMA STATE -4, (OPEN +1) push if there was ever a time the cowboys seemed primed to break the sooner jinx this would seem to be the year. osu has held their last 4 opponents to season lows in total yards, allowing just 1 offensive td. the only 2 times ou has been a dog in this series since '98, they covered/won both. in fact, the sooners are 6-0 su/ats in this series when they don't have the better record. I think oklahoma state wins, but oklahoma covers.
13. (10-1) #3 ALABAMA AT (6-5) AUBURN +19.5, (OPEN +18.5). win hard to see the tide not winning this (saban is 95-1 su in his career as a -20+ favorite). bryce young is having one of the all time great seasons for a frosh qb. auburn qb t.j. finley is making just his 2nd start of the season. that said, alabama has scuffled some in true road games (uf, a&m, 1st half vs msu). this is the tide's 1st away game in 6 weeks. the run game has not been as dominant, putting a lot on young's shoulders, while war eagle has held 4 of its last 5 opponents to season low total yards. in the iron bowl lately, the home team has won the last 4 su, gone 9-5 su. in their last 63 home games, au is 53-10 su, with just 1 loss (34-10 to uga this yr) by 20+ pts. off 3 straight losses, the tigers sell out. alabama wins, but auburn hangs around.
14. (8-3) CLEMSON AT (6-5) SOUTH CAROLINA +11.5, (OPEN +14). loss tigers have won last 6 in the series, and come off easily their best offensive performance of the season (48-27 over wake forest, 543 ttl yds). but the gamecocks' d is a much stiffer test. was cool seeing usc-e coach shane beamer tear up after becoming bowl eligible w/the 21-17 upset over auburn. cu has covered just 1 road game this year, while the 'cocks are a $$-making 12-5 ats getting 8+ at home. upset alert. south carolina.
15. (7-4) PENN STATE AT (9-2) #12 MICHIGAN STATE – PICK, (OPEN -1). loss both teams are really beat up physically. msu has not been good (0-5 ats) after playing tosu. psu's defense is ranked 26th, sparty's is 119th. the nitts' back up qb was impressive filling in for clifford in a 28-0 win over rutgers, plus in his career coach james franklin is 30-4 su/27-7 ats off a win vs foes off a loss. pennsylvania state.
16. (5-6) FLORIDA STATE AT (5-6) FLORIDA -2.5, (OPEN -10). loss the noles started 0-4, and many clamored for coach mike norvell's head, but now they're 1 game away from bowl eligible. uf began 3-1, the 1 being a 2 pt loss to alabama, then collapsed and dan mullen is out, but still also a win away from a bowl trip. proves 5-6 can feel at least 2 different ways. btw the gators have outgained their opponents in 10 of their 11 games this season, but they're just 1-3 ats lately as home chalk of less than 10. visitor in the series is 7-2 ats too. that combined w/the current karma makes it tough to go against florida state. so I won't.
