A new study shows a 30% reduction in atherosclerotic disease-- strokes, MI, etc.-- with a Mediterranean diet. Unsaturated fat-- e.g., nuts, oil oil... Fairly dramatic results. Reduce red meat, saturated fat, pastry, processed foods. Eat more nuts, olive oil, fruits, and veggies+ moderate wine with dinner. www.nytimes.com/2013/02/26/health/mediterranean-diet-can-cut-heart-disease-study-finds.html?hp

This new study from Barcelona may be a true game changer in health circles. It was a well-designed study with unexpectedly dramatic results. The article was the lead article on the front page of the New York Times yesterday-- somewhat unusual for a "health" article.

In recent years I've read or heard of various sources pushing a paleolithic lifestyle.... from diet, to exercise, to sleep, to lifestyle....even how to walk or run. The more radical Greenies even want us to abandon our high-tech lifestyle with it's machines and computers in favor of an emission-free, low-impact lifestyle. "Back to the farm", as it were. They long for the day that we can all afford to live off the land like we did hundreds or thousands of years ago. Ignoring, of course, that the "Mediterranean diet" is that precisely because that is where that stuff grows, and it's not economically feasible for most people to maintain that diet. Only the wealthiest half of the wealthiest nations can afford to maintain that lifestyle. www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0732.pdfAs it is, Americans spend more on food in a year than most people make in a year...over 6K/year for a couple. www.boston.com/news/world/articles/2007/1/07/average_earnings_worldwideIn other words, for most of the world, good luck affording the Mediterranean diet.....Go, and die well.
