Our cable provider ran fiber optics cable a few years ago for cable TV and internet. Last spring they stopped cable service and provide only internet now. Thy told us to just toss the old cable boxes. Are they worth anything? I have two and can get a few more.

Thy told us to just toss the old cable boxes. Are they worth anything? I have two and can get a few more. All the connectivity approvals is usually done at the central center. The boxes won’t deliver free programming by itself. But even then boxes are yesterday and have little value, I’d guess. It’s just a gateway. New TVs are all minicomputers. Are boxesneeded for old TVs? Beyond my scope but even then you need to have an account to use, as I understand it. One less remote. Then again someone may know better. |

You can still use your older TV. I bought a Roku device that plugs into my non-smart TV and subscribed to You Tube TV for streaming. My step-daughter actually set it all up for us. We piggy-back on her subscription so it costs us nothing. You'll need a Roku for each TV. The ones she got us cost about $25 on Amazon. I'm on Firestick and stream everything. Something like 30,000 channels. It's a complicated process but involves a VPN subscription and IPTV subscriptions. Much cheaper than ROKU or cable. |

That's a very good deal but I was referring to whoever is paying the monthly YouTube bill or whatever subscription services are used. I pay about $6/mo. for an IPTV provider and a $99 annual subscription for a VPN, but the VPN is used on our TV, phones and computers. |

Just passing through ... if you need a new tv, I suggest you spend a few dollars for a seriously good tv (ex: Sony XBR tv in various sizes, 4k video). It will come with built-in apps for a dozen online services. And then spend a few more dollars for some 5.1 sound system to attach to it. Youtube for example has a few million videos -- you can get college courses on it, or learn electronics, etc. At the least get a soundbar for the tv; much broadcast tv is in stereo. |
