Think of the poor, starving, ill people that money could have helped. Instead, the Catholic Church will probably use all the money donated to but another shiny token to worship instead.A more than century-old church artifact worth $2 million was stolen from its New York City sanctuary, authorities said, in a brazen break-in that local Catholic leaders called a crime of "disrespect and hate." A tabernacle made of 18-carat gold and decorated with jewels had been housed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn before someone stole it sometime from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon, officials said. Think of the "disrespect" having all this money tied up in a wasteful item to worship while hungry and homeless people pass by that church daily. They must "hate" those lowly people to ignore their plight while they worship that icon.

Hey, on the redhat plus side, at least they won't have the money available to feed and clothe illegal alien kids.

They must "hate" those lowly people to ignore their plight while they worship that icon. Yeah, they should have used the money to buy private jets and luxury properties for blathering grifters in the pulpit-- like Protestant televangelists, eh? I'm not an apologist for the RC, but, to understand the significance of this tabernacle, you need to first learn about the traditional, Apostolic significance of the eucharistic sacrament. For starters, which are the two greatest commandments? Meanwhile, there is a scripture that speaks directly to your misguided understanding of the Blessed Sacrament here. Pay attention and learn something for once. (Hint: You are, basically, taking the position of Judas Iscariot in this scripture.) John 12:3-7
3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? ...7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

P.S. Probably the best charitable facility for the poor here in Denver is the Roman Catholic Samaritan House. (I know that because I was Medical Director of a University Hospital program for the homeless mentally ill for three years back in the 1990s.) The (Protestant) Salvation Army also does good work.

While I don't disagree w you, and the spiritual meaning to the story, if it occurred, really points to Judas, as you suggested, there is an easier lay frame. The oil was her property and should she not be free to do as she chooses w it. no further explanation necessary, absent a different message being proclaimed. Same for the artifact. I guess, probably accurately, that someone bought it for the church, w their money. A gift, perhaps, based on use. Someone may have chosen to do that instead donating to the poor or perhaps in addition to. Maybe.

...libs are very good at knowing how to spend other peoples' money... You both missed the theological point here. What are the two chief commandments? I missed nothing and we generally agreed. The only difference you chased the theological rabbit hole. I, the far more practical lay viewpoint, it was her property and if she wanted to use it on someone else, that's her business. Wouldn't play well in the Bible but it does, w/o the man made religion.

Once the parish gets the idea that what's your property is yours, the entire Christian concept is screwed. You're speaking heresy. No, IMO, it says that there are many ways to aid the cause and you get to choose with your money which way you want to do it, not that you can decide, 'My money, my business, and I'm keepin' my money for me and goin' to Vegas!".

Well, I didn't mention foot fetish. Anyway, decent point. When you die, you leave it all.
