My sister in law and niece love to go to garage sales and junk shopping.
Today they went to this place where people donate household items and clothing to be resold. So my niece focused in on a hatbox style container with a bunch of miscellaneous articles in it.
After paying $10 or $15 for it, they checked out what they bought. At the bottom of the box, they found an old full flap holster. Inside of that holster was a Walther P-38!
I got pictures of each side of it, and they show an AC42 marked P-38, with all matching serial numbers. "AC" is the wartime code for the Walther factory and "42" is the year it was made. There are no import markings on it, so it came into the U.S. before 1968.
My brother, who doesn't know a lot about guns, told me that the finish is rust free, and running a few patches through the bore did not find any obvious corrosion or crud. Just from the pictures I can tell this gun is easily worth $1000, and if the holster is genuine WWII issue, add a couple of hundred more.

It has two magazines with it, but unfortunately they are loaded with Winchester factory ammo, so that rules out the possibility of getting a few rounds of Nazi ammo as an added bonus.
I'll be going to look at it this weekend, to give it a good inspection and to show my brother how to field strip it. There's a good chance it might get a workout at the range, too.
It goes without saying that I am EXTREMELY jealous! I never have that kind of luck.
