NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS, IN DUBLIN, IRELAND VS
NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS -12.5
so, frank solich, in his first 4 years as head coach in lincoln '98-'01, went 44-7 and had 3 top 10 finishes. had 1 bad year (7-7) in '02, then bounced back to go 9-3 in '03 and got fired as a failure, despite never having a losing season. flash forward to scott frost, another former husker player turned coach like solich; he goes 15-29 in his 1st 4 seasons and gets another year. hm. in '21, unl pasted n'western 56-7, the worst loss in pat fitzgerald's tenure in evanston, and the 'cats still haven't settled on a qb after seeing 6 different starters in the role the past 3 seasons. huskers have texas transfer casey thompson as the new starter. all those close losses a year ago have many seeing nebraska getting over the hump, and they might. but they're just 2-7 ats as double digit chalk vs big 10 foes since '14, while fitz is 9-1 ats as a dog. go u northwestern to keep it close. oh yeah, solich is on the cfb hof ballot for '23.
WYOMING COWBOYS AT
ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI -10
1st ever mtg. cowboys are just 1-19 su vs big 10 all time. illini are 5-2 ats in its last 7 home openers, return their best rb, top 2 wr's and top 2 tacklers on d while wyoming lost their top 4 players on offense to the transfer portal and are 129th out of 131 fbs programs in terms of returning experience. illinois also brought in a new o-c from utsa, barry lunney, whose team averaged 37/game last season. illinois.
CHARLOTTE 49ERS AT
FLORIDA ATLANTIC OWLS -7
visitor has covered 4 straight in the series. nice revenge spot for the niners, who got pummeled 38-9 by fau last yr despite dominating the owls in the first half. charlotte also returns its starting qb and his 6 top receivers. I'll take the points.
NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN AT
UT ELPASO MINERS +1
mean green have won the last 5 between these two, who both made bowls last year. that said, 3 of those games went down to the wire. n texas starts an entirely new d-line, while utep returns 8 starters on d. miners.
NEVADA WOLFPACK - AT
NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES +9
ex-gopher coach jerry kill takes over las cruces this season, where there's been just 1 year over .500 since '02. nevada has been strong making the post season (4 straight bowls) but enters '22 weak on experience (just 6 returning starters, last in fbs in terms of experience) and brought in 12 transfers to help fill the void for new head coach ken wilson. in the wolfpack's last 26 road games, they've only won 7 by 10+. kill's teams, btw, are 17-8 ats as double digit dogs, 6-0 ats the last 6 at home. the aggies hang around.
VANDERBILT COMMODORES AT
HAWAII RAINBOW WARRIORS +8
you don't see vandy laying a td+ on the road very often (not since '13, a 24-7 win/ats loss as a 29 pt favorite at u-mass). but it makes sense considering the off season hawaii went thru. the rainbow warriors also only have 6 starters back, after massive player defections via transfer portal due to accusations of mistreatment by ex-head coach todd graham, who's been replaced by former hawaii qb timmy chang. w/the 'dores not winning a sec game since '19, I think they pour it on here.
