There is a foodfight going on over on the NFL board about who is smarter about the game of football.
That got me thinking about baseball in 2022 and how much I DON'T know about the game, even after following it for nearly 60 years.
The reason I am learning new things is because of technology.
I now know pitch speed, ball rotation, amount of break of breaking pitches, and launch angles and exit speed of hits to name a few things. Add in all the analytics
and it is a treasure trove of info.
It is mind-blowing.
Used to be the color guy told funny stories. Now he needs a computer and a stat staff to comment intelligently.
All this makes the game much more enjoyable.

Took me a while to get into it, and sometimes announcers will bring up a stat that I never heard of before that strikes me as TMI, so I get what you are saying. Yeah, some of it’s interesting…will admit that. It’s just over the top sometimes. Where I enjoy it most is in pitch selection. The announcers have the ability to discuss things like varying pitch speed from say 97 to 90 Mph on their fastball to get a batter off balance just enough to alter the swing. Sort of a half changeup. That is a subtlety that could not be reported BITD. |
