I turned 10 in 1961. The PRIME age for a baseball fan, I've always thought. I was watching quick pitch tonite on MLB Network, remembering back to those days, some 60 years ago. Remembering the turmoil, all the arguments, and talk of asterisks... If you're an older fan, you'll also remember that 1961 was the year MLB went from 154 games to 162 games. And besides Maris & Mantle's chases of the Babe, the argument was raised about those extra eight games, and whether or not that should have any impact on a new HR record. I've been a Yankee hater for a LOONNGGG time. The Yankees record tonight is 89-58, 147 games. Judge has played in 143 of them. In the 1961 inaugural season for 162 games, the Yanks played 163, and Maris hit #61 in that last game. Maris only played in 161 games, so where, & who, gets the asterisk? Again, long time Yankee hater, but from what I've heard and seen of Aaron Judge, he seems like a good kid, & a team player who reminds us of what is right about baseball. I'm rooting for him to hit #62 in the next seven games. Good luck, young man.

The one I'm rooting for is Puljois and his chase to get #700 before the end of the year. What a glorious career he has had.

I'm rooting for him to hit #62 in the next seven games. Good luck, young man. I wasn't alive yet but growing up a baseball fan, I always loved the history of the game, good and bad. IMO, that '61 season was more bad than good. Ford Frick was an asshole for ever introducing the idea that a "distinctive mark" be added to a record book MLB didn't even control at the time. Ironically, it was under his watch that the AL expanded by two teams and ultimately moved to 162 games so for him to create such animosity to help his old friend Babe keep the record is a shame. Kudos to Commissioner Fay Vincent for finally righting the wrong but unfortunately Maris had passed a few years earlier and never knew he held the record. Another irony is Maris actually hit his 60th HR in less ABs than Babe did. Not that it mattered to anyone back then (or now) but worth noting. And finally, having the media concoct the idea that there was a rift between Maris and Mantle was equally as shameful. Not only did the two live together during that season, they went into business together years later. By all accounts they were good friends but the stories of the toll that season took on Maris, including death threats, make it hard to imagine the pressure he must have been under every day. Craziness.

PED's will make you hit the ball harder but most of these guys still have to barrel the ball up to drive it out of the park. I wonder just how much the PEDs really affected home run numbers.

IMO, a lot. Bonds was able to wait a little longer than normal people to see the ball move because the PEDs created more bat speed with which to catch up. One undoubtedly had to possess the ability to barrel the ball, but if you give any good ML hitter, especially a good fastball hitter, that little extra time, they'll kill the ball every time.

How would one create more power without more bat speed? I meant strength__I cant see Peds making you faster with a batWhether you call it strength or power, both absolutely increase your bat speed. I would love to have seen the exit velocity numbers they use now when Bonds (amongst others) wasn't juicing and compare them against when he was. I guarantee you there would have been a marked increase.

Benefits can include increasing strength, speed, or endurance (through ergogenic drugs) or by altering body weight or body composition. I stand corrected.

My whole point was it doesn't matter how hard you hit the ball if you don't make solid contact with a little lift. You could have guys like me, Cerrato Jr., who could track and rack a fastball anytime. But Start throwing me off speed breaking stuff and it's a whole different story. Turned me into a full time football player.
