Why not? We did in the 60's. The only paperwork needed at the hardware store was dollar bills. “A recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen could have broader implications than at first appeared. Amid a flurry of lawsuits challenging gun laws across the United States, analysts are now claiming that the top court’s decision could potentially end all gun control laws in the country. In this live Q&A with Crossroads host Joshua Philipp, we’ll discuss these stories and others, and answer questions from the audience.” Evidently, tonight at 10:30am Eastern there’s to be an online discussion about this on something called Crossroads. One link appears to be at: rumble.com/user/Crossroads_JoshuaPhilipp. Wouldn’t put money on it, but it might be an intriguing discussion.

"Some day?" You can legally buy a gun with no paperwork at all RIGHT NOW. You just have to live in the right state that still exercises freedom.
I would recommend bills of sale for both the buyer and the seller, but only for THEM to keep as legal self-protection.

And there is nothing to stop a person from buying a gun "new from the store," deciding he doesn't like it or suddenly needs money, and selling it on to another person in a private sale without ever shooting it. To me, that IS "new from the store."
Most "used" guns, if they are kept free of rust and corrosion, are not shot enough to be considered "worn." If I can find used S&W Model 629's for $400 like my son in law did, I'll buy them all day long.
