of all the football games i've watched in my life, i cannot remember a game in which a team cannot field a QB who is capable of throwing a forward pass for half the game. let alone for something like this to happen in such a meaningful game.
someone will have to educate me on why teams only dress 2 QB's in the NFL today. for such an important position, you'd think depth at this specific position would be a thing to strongly consider.
entering the game, i felt really good about the eagles chances. i thought san fran was going to struggle with a rookie qb on the road. and it seemed like san fran was just due for one of those weeks after winning 12 straight. i've watched enough NFL to know the ebb and flow of a team and how things can rapidly change from week to week. but the amount of crap that went wrong for san fran far exceeded what i expected. i even bet the eagles -18.5 (alternative spread) at +600 b/c the eagles were involved in lots of blowouts this year.
jalen hurts didn't look very comfortable in the first half. san fran was excellent in coverage, they are great at tackling and they were in hurts head. but san fran had one weakness in their defense that the eagles were able to eventually exploit. san fran was light in the middle of their defensive line. san fran linebackers were so concerned about hurts ability to get to the outside and run that they were just delayed in reacting whenever the eagles run the ball up the middle. it really was just that simple. that's why a mobile QB is such a luxury. it makes the defenders think more. and in a sport where split second decisions are often the reason a play is successful or not, that's all you need.
the bottom line is that hurts didn't need to be great. he just needed to limit turnovers and keep san fran defenders honest with his ability to scramble. had san fran had a QB and an offense that could score, things would obviously be different.
i mentioned here before how great the eagles pass rush is. haason reddick wasn't even a finalist for defensive player of the year and he's been doing this all season. this is what the eagles do. they pressure the QB and create turnovers.
do i recognize that the eagles were fortunate to have an easy path to the super bowl? yes. absolutely. but that doesn't take away from having a 14 win regular season. and i've witnessed some pretty bad injury luck as an eagles fan in prior season. this happens unfortunately.
i'll do a separate thread on the matchup vs. the chiefs later on. but quickly, i preferred the bengals b/c they were vulnerable against a superior pass rush with injuries on their o-line. and while the chiefs lack the quality skill players, they are very solid everywhere and their QB obviously makes everyone else better.
