bummer. the game was on sunday. it is now wednesday. over the past few days i've cut myself off from the world. i haven't been on social media. i have not listened to any podcasts. all i've literally done is work, sleep, eat and help take care of my kids. it's been actually kind of refreshing to disconnect. but i'm slowly making my way back.
as a philly sports fan, this loss ranks up there as maybe the worst loss of my life. and that's saying something as philly sports teams are notoriously runner ups. everytime i re examine the game, i get sick b/c i quickly come to the realization that they were literally one play from winning the game. here are just a few examples of plays that I think would have gave the Eagles the game:
- The Eagles went offsides on a crucial 3rd and 1 on a drive where they were about to go up 2 TD's. instead hurts inexplicable fumbles the next play which is returned for a TD. that's a probably 10 or 14 pt difference in a game that was decided by 3 pts
- devonta smith makes a hard catch on the sideline at the end of the 2nd quarter. it looks like the ball was possibly moving but at the time, seemed really difficult to overturn. the refs overturn it while we all had no clue if it was a catch or not. instead of being in great position to get 7, the eagles had to settle for 3.
- hurts hit WR3 quez watkins on a beautifully thrown deep ball that watkins jumps to catch instead of just staying in stride. he drops it and the eagles wind up with 3 pts instead of 7 on that drive as well.
- the obvious controversial holding penalty that essentially ended the game for KC. not only was it a borderline call at an absolute crucial moment of the game, but the refs missed a blatant hands to the face by a chiefs offensive lineman to the eagles defensive lineman on the same play. the entire world missed out on seeing jalen hurts get the ball back with 2 minutes left down 3 at the end of the super bowl. could have possibly been one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the super bowl.
- the playing field was in horrible shape. i can't remember if i posted about the field here or not. i think i did b/c i remember how much michigan struggled against TCU on the field. the eagles lacked a pass rush but i have seen several clips of their edge rushers just slipping nonstop when trying to pivot on the offensive tackle. it impacted KC as well but i think it hurt the eagles more b/c it neutralized the strength of the eagles defense which is their edge rushers. just needed one sack to stop any of KC's 2nd half drives. maybe even one tipped pass wins the game. just brutal how close they were.
with all that being said, KC deserved to win. they were unstoppable in the 2nd half. i know andy reid very well. he used to take the eagles to the nfc title game every year with the lamest group of WR's up until they signed terrell owens. he just knows how to scheme. his flaw was always his time management but he had no issues on sunday. and the eagles just didn't make the play they needed to make which hurts b/c they literally only needed to make 1 freakin play to win. they had great chances to get a knockout blow in the first half and just didn't do it. just inexplicable to me.
getting to the super bowl is so difficult. besides having everything click together, you really need to luck to stay healthy and get through the playoffs unscathed. i can't just tell myself that it's ok b/c they'll be back. so much would have to go their way to get back. they are going to have a first place schedule next year. they have a ton of players who are free agents. they lost their offensive and defensive coordinators. all this stuff matters.
ugh.
