RIP Willis Reed

Another one from our youth passes away. Loved watching those Knicks teams in the 70’s. How basketball was meant to be played.

yep. the sound coming across the tv from msg when reed made those first couple shots was indelible. ironically that same game elevated walt frazier into ny sports legend as well.

Believe he had 36 points and 19 assists. Hell of a night.

jerry west was my favorite player growing up, and he was amazing per usual in this series... clearly the best player overall on the floor. still remember that 3/4 court shot he hit to tie one of the earlier games at the buzzer. but that knicks team was fun to watch, and I appreciated them much more as I started playing more. reed, frazier, bradley, debusschere (sp?), cazzie russell was on that team, a young buckeye-bill hosket-played a little. they also had another guard... can't remember his name, left handed I think? they just seemed to play together as a unit.

but has there ever been a more star-crossed team sports star than the logo? he played in 9 nba finals... and the lakers won a single title. most of the losses vs boston. in 6 of those 9 years he averaged 30+/game in the playoffs. unreal.

Other guard was Dick Barnett. West had some hellacious Finals to be sure...shame he only had one win in nine tries. I get how they lost to the Celtics most of those years....that said, no excuse for losing to the Celtics in 1969. And hard to understand how they lost to the Knicks in 1970 and 1973. Those 3 series cemented Wilt's "can't win the big one" narrative.

barnett. yep… thx. he had a quirky shooting motion. anyway, back to willis. I remember chris schenkel’s voice on the abc broadcast (always got a kick out of hearing him do hoops as well as pro bowling - lol) and how that crowd reacted seeing reed come in the floor late in warm ups.

As a kid, I truly hated Reed for what he did to my Lakers. The Knicks had no business winning that title.
As for Barnett, we used to try to shoot like he did, with that weird leg kick. How he fell into that style was a mystery to us. It never made it easier.

You have to shoot the ball however it works for you…just like a batting stance.
