Keisei's back, you already know. But Husker head coach Fred Hoiberg was also upbeat about the recovery track some injured players are on heading into the next season.
"Everything's coming together," said Hoiberg as he and Keisei Tominaga met the media on Friday morning.
Obviously the senior guard's decision to return was topic numero uno at the press conference. "One of the biggest needs for us this offseason was to get Keisei back in a Husker uniform," said Hoiberg, making no bones about it. "So we could not be more excited about that."
We'll do a deeper dive into Tominaga's decision to return, but here are some other notes about the new-look Husker squad taken from the interview.
– Don't sleep on the Brice Williams addition.
Hoiberg reiterated how he believes it's "a huge pickup for us," with the Huskers adding the 6-7 guard from Charlotte. Because of versatility. "He finished off last season playing incredibly well ."
– He also added that incoming freshman Eli Rice measured in upon arrival at more than 6-8.
"Freshmen obviously have a big learning curve but the fact that we have these two months leading into the Spain trip and the valuable experience over there." Hoiberg added that redshirt freshman point guard Ramel Lloyd Jr. made huge gains in the weight room.
– Juwan Gary is almost full strength now.
He's going to be on the court on Monday, in fact. "Not full. He will not be cleared for contact for probably at least another month, but he's doing pretty much everything," Hoiberg said.
While recovering from his shoulder surgery, he worked a lot on one-handed shooting and addressing his balance in his jumper that Hoiberg thinks will make him more consistent as a shooter.
– Blaise Keita will be able to do some light work on the floor, as he recovers from that ankle injury that lingered last season. "No jumping yet. But he'll be able to do some spot shooting and hopefully in the next three to four weeks he'll be cleared for full activity as well. So we should have him for at least a limited role once we get to Spain."
Hoiberg believes he has different lineups he can throw out there with this roster: playing small or big. "It's been a good offseason for us."
– Ahron Ulis would seemingly be the favorite for the point guard job, given his experience at Iowa.
But Hoiberg notes Jamarques Lawrence can handle some of that role too after working that spot at times last year. Tominaga could initiate offense as well and the coach thinks bigs like Rienk Mast and Josiah Allick can also bring the ball up at times and relieve some pressure.
– Allick is recovering from a postseason ankle injury and is enthused about what he can do now with two good ankles. His timetable for a full return still lines up close to that Spain trip, as he told Husker247 a few weeks back.
"Maybe a week or two behind Blaise," Hoiberg said of that injury. "But we're going to take a very conservative approach. We're going to get some very beneficial time on the practice court but those guys aren't 100 percent ready to go, we're not going to push them in the summer. I need those guys ready on Nov. 8 or whenever our first game is this year ... Everybody is right on track with their rehab."
– While Tominaga will be heading off to play with the Japanese team during the summer, the Huskers start with their workouts on Monday.
"We'll start putting in team stuff immediately and then just start doing more live action once we get to July summer sessions ... heading into the Spain trip," Hoiberg said.
He added that he has is coaches doing projects watching all the NBA series and seeing if there's any specific actions the Huskers could run within their five spread-out offense. "And what actions could we add specifically to get Keisei shots to free him up."
