Colt 45s celebrate a century of Tiger Field: A journey from wooden grandstands to steel marvels
The Colt 45s are celebrating 100 years of Tiger Field this weekend.
"How many places or buildings, or objects, are in Redding that are 100 years old, still in the same place that they started, doing the same thing that they were designed to do? And I can only think of one, and that's Tiger Field. And it opened, here, in 1923 and it's 2023," said Rick Bosetti.
Of course, it's different than it was 100 years ago. Gone are the covered wooden grandstands, now with modern steel and metal in their place. And where there was once a wooden fence, debuting now a newly painted brick wall in the outfield, now a bright yellow.
There are some special giveaways planned.
"If you've purchased one of these [t-shirts] prior, or if you buy one tonight when you come, and you want to come to tomorrow night's game or Sunday's game, you get $2 off. So anyone who already bought one of our anniversary shirts gets $2 off. I've got a number of broken bats that I've been accumulating through the course of this season and we're going to draw admission tickets for those and provide those. And I think what we're going to end up doing too is giving away a couple season passes for next year to a luck winner as well," Bosetti said.
From 1948 to 1951, Tiger Field was the home of the Class-D Redding Browns--a farm team of the St. Louis Browns.
One of those players says the name Tiger Field came from a player named Tiger Flowers.
"I guess every time he'd get up, he'd hit a homerun. So, they named the field Tiger Field, after Tiger Flowers. That's where the name comes from and I don't think hardly anybody really knows that," Rich Morgan told Mangas at the field on Friday.
The Colt 45s start a series on Friday with a team out of Sacramento. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $6 and there's plenty of ice cream and cold beverages. Their second game is on Saturday, July 15, at the same time. And their third game is on Sunday is at 6 p.m.
