Shootings at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night left at least 18 people dead and at least 13 others injured, with the suspect still at large on Thursday morning.
The big picture: Shelter-in-place orders issued by Maine State Police remained in effect on Thursday in Lewiston and the nearby towns of Bowdoin and Lisbon, where a car wanted in connection with the shootings was recovered, Maine Gov. Janet Mills said at a news conference.
Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said on Wednesday "hundreds" of police officers were searching for a person of interest, identified as 40-year-old Robert Card.
The Lewiston Police Department in a Facebook post said Card "should be considered armed and dangerous," following "the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation," a bowling alley recently renamed Just-In-Time Recreation.
Maine State Police in a Facebook post just before midnight urged people to be cautious due to a "shooting incident with multiple casualties" in multiple locations in Lewiston.
Eight of the 18 victims had been identified as of Thursday morning, said Maine State Police Colonel William Ross.
An arrest warrant for eight counts of murder has been issued for the suspect, Ross said. The counts are expected to increase as more victims are identified.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston division, which covers Maine, is also investigating the shooting.
Of note: President Biden has been briefed on the situation and offered federal assistance to Maine's governor, per a White House statement.
Details: Sauschuck said at the briefing that the shootings involving "multiple casualties" began to unfold just before 7pm ET.
Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office later Wednesday evening posted on Facebook images of a suspect carrying what looked like a semiautomatic rifle. "We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate," it said.
The Lewiston PD issued a shelter-in-place order for areas affected by the shootings at 8pm ET. In a Facebook post, the police department urged people to "stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals."
Meanwhile, the Central Maine Medical Center said in a statement Wednesday evening that the hospital was "reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event," adding: "At this time there are no specifics to share on the number of casualties."
