This off-season has so far shown us how the organization of college football is unraveling. We see players moving around without much reason from the standpoint of what is happening on the field. That leads me to conclude that the ultimate recruiting tool, NIL, is starting to run the recruiting and transfer portal show.
While good for the kids, it cannot be good for college football.

Yep, don't bet on a team's final roster until the first game of next season. The young monkeys are taking over the zoo.

The cynic in me says that the only difference between then and now is that it is out from under the table. Certainly USC, in 2004, will agree. Though in 2004, Aubarn was the one who got hosed and is known as the National Championship Team That Wasn't. And a game V USC would have been a classic, imo.
Then in '93, The Barn was the best team and never was seen on TV. The difference between then and now, as a picture in the dictionary, would have been that Aubarn team.

I'm sorry, but in a world where 3 teams are undefeated, the one who played Citadel sits out the NCGame. That ain't getting hosed. That's common sense.

As it turned out OK didn't give USC much of a game. The much better game, for me, would have been The Barn V USC.
USC's national title was later vacated. Top team left was The Barn. OK bought out the BG contract from Auburn and the Citadel was what was left. But your point has value, as that was self inflicted by Aubarn. IAC, Colorado, who OK treated like a stray dog, was not much better than the Citadel, that year.

Back to the discussion at hand, can you imagine a kid today being told that just 20 years ago, USC had to vacate a national championship for 5% of the money a 5 star kid who has never played a down of college football is getting just to sign an LOI? My, how times change...

My, how times change... Apologies. But you are right. And it went on coast to coast. Miami players were paid to work in S FL fruit packing plants, Aubarn had a drive through teller for FB players, in BB, Sam Gilbert just smiles, ......... Consider, if today was then, SMU doesn't get the death penalty and the SWC, where everyone had oil money at a spigot, hangs on a bit longer.

...and for all of you who argued for years (eventually successfully) for the playoff system in CFB, I do really hate to say it, but I told ya so...

The playoff system, as broken as it may be, is still better than the poll system and light years better than the BCS. A 12 team playoff means there could easily be a 3 loss team playing for the NC. With this expansion from 4to 12, we see the beginning of further expansion. Soon it will be 16 teams. As streaming takes over and we have to pay for each playoff game, more games will be added. Look at the NFL, the NBA, whatever hockey is called, etc. Two teams with 9-8 records in the NFL playoffs.
