Alexis Markowski's monster double-double leads Nebraska women past Purdue
Alexis Markowski scored 20 points and had a career-high 21 rebounds to help the Nebraska women's basketball team rally in a big way to beat Purdue 77-65 on Saturday in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The junior center from Lincoln played like she is determined to get Nebraska to the NCAA tournament after the Huskers missed out last season.
Markowski’s 21 rebounds are the fourth-most in a game in program history, and the most for a Nebraska player in a game during the past 33 seasons.
Markowski ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten in rebounding.
“I mean, are we surprised at this point?” Nebraska guard Jaz Shelley said to the Huskers Radio Network. “(Markowski) is unreal, and it’s so fun to play with her. She hustles. It’s incredible. It saves our team. We wouldn’t be where we are right now if she didn’t have 21 rebounds. She’s a superstar.”

First-year assistant coach Julian Assibey had been trying to motivate Markowski to have a 20-rebound game. Her previous high was 19 earlier this season against Penn State.
“It was funny because at practice (Assibey) was like, ‘When are you going to get me 20 boards?” Markowski said. “I was like, ‘It will happen when it happens.’ And it’s funny because today is his birthday.”
After getting behind quickly by 10 points in the first quarter, Nebraska outscored Purdue 65-43 over the final three quarters.
Nebraska concluded a stretch of three games in seven days with a 2-1 record, including a win against No. 2 Iowa, to move into fourth place in the Big Ten standings.
The Huskers (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten) swept the season series with Purdue.
Markowski did have to head to the locker room early after being ejected with two minutes left in the game. While pumping her fist to celebrate a basket, she connected with a Purdue player and was assessed a technical foul.
That made for an odd ending to a game she played so well in. A police officer escorted Markowski to the locker room.
“I was like, ‘You don’t have to escort me. I’m OK,’” Markowski said. “And then I was pulling out my phone so I could watch the rest of the game. Being back there I could hear the crowd cheering.”
Shelley added 18 points and had six assists for the Huskers. She made each of her 10 free throws.
Logan Nissley also had 18 points during the first career start for the freshman guard from Bismarck, North Dakota. She was 6-for-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers.
“I thought (Nissley) just played aggressive and took really good in-rhythm shots for her,” coach Amy Williams said. “I’m so proud of how she took advantage of this opportunity.”
Mary Ashley Stevenson and Ashley Ellis each had 16 points for Purdue (11-14, 4-10).
It was an odd first half. Purdue outscored Nebraska by 10 in the first quarter. Then Nebraska outscored the Boilermakers by 14 in the second quarter.
Nebraska took control of the game with a 12-0 run in the third quarter. Markowski dominated in the third quarter with nine points, six rebounds and a 3-pointer.
A big difference after the first quarter was Nebraska going inside the paint more.
“We just played together,” Shelley said. “We had people step up at different times and it was fun basketball.”
