I was contacted today by a guy who works at one of the gun outlets I frequent, and he told me that they were selling WW-II era M-1 carbines for $500. So I went to take a look, found the best of the batch, and talked him down to $475. For a gun made in 1944, the bore is nice and bright, and the rifling is sharp. The stock is dented in places, but it's 80 years old, so that's understandable. The stock and the rifle itself have matching serial numbers too --- another plus.
When I got it home, I went over the gun's markings in detail, and found out that since it was made by National Postal Meter and is all original, it's worth in excess of $2,000.
Why did I want an M-1 carbine? Why not?? And for once, luck was on MY side.

If I can find one for $475, sure.
I'm still checking and double checking to make sure my M-1 carbine windfall is real, and all indications are that it is.
FTR, mine is in better shape than THIS one:
