Listen to Maj. Brian Shul's story about the Blackbird's speed check with ATC. Some pilots are hotshots who think they can outdo each other.

Listen to Maj. Brian Shul's story about the Blackbird's speed check with ATC. Some pilots are hotshots who think they can outdo each other.
RIP Maj Shul. He died last year, at 75. Shul collapsed right after giving his famous SR-71 presentation for an audience in Reno, NV on May 20th, 2023.
In 'Nam, he flew over 200 close combat air support missions as a Foreign Air Advisor, in conjunction w Air America, primarily flying a T-28 Trojan, which was built as a military training aircraft, then used in many roles incl as a counter-insurgency aircraft.
He was shot down, in a fireball "around" the Cambodian border, about died due to extensive burns, found by Air Force Special Operations Command Pararescue teams and went through recovery for a couple of years or so. And made it back to flight status. Flew A-7s, A-10s, w his final assignment flying the Blackbirds. A comeback worth of note.

Saw quite a few T-28's in my day, but never as in-service birds. By the time my older brother entered UPT in 1972, the Air Force had moved up to T-37's for primary trainers, then on to the T-38 for the really fun part.
